Effect Of Drug Abuse Among Women Or Pregnant Mothers
Chapter one
1.1 Introduction
The history of the human race may be traced back to the use of pharmaceuticals since ancient times. Herbs, roots, back leaves, and plants have been used to relieve pain and assist control ailments, and when appropriately supplied to persons or patient, they have been noted to be a blessing.
Unfortunately, certain medications cause some initial adverse effects, such as feeling good, action, serenity, and power. What began as something of remediation, action, and culture measure progressively became a problem of reliance and addition over time.
Drugs are considered abused when they are not utilised for the intended purpose or are taken without a medical prescription. However, drug-addicted mothers or individuals are primarily those who fund the effects of drugs as answers to their issues. As with alcohol and alcoholics, drugs become so important to users that they are unable to face reality without them.
The World Health Organisation Committee on Drugs defines drug addiction in the following ways:
“A state of temporary or chronic intoxication damaging to the individual and society caused by the frequent ingestion of a drug (natural or synthetic) whose characteristics include:
i. An overwhelming urge or need (consumption) to continue taking the substance and to abstain from it at any costs.
ii. A tendency to raise the dose
iii. Psychological (physiological) and, in some cases, physical reliance on pharmacological effort.
Drug addiction is a modern-day social problem. It has been identified as a social canker that has piqued the curiosity of our society and residents in both urban and rural locations. New drug additions, particularly some that are not yet under worldwide supervision, are merging.
The issue has reached a chronic stage, to the point where there is a development or what equates to adding sub. Culture in our society, which is symbolised by its own mode of dressing, its own music, entertainment, and its meeting places witness on the abuse of drugs have given various detinations on ” Drug Abuse SEEDAN 1978) define drug abuse as self-administration of drugs in a manner that deviates from the approved social pattern” While CLARK 1978.
Also says drug “outside medical practice for personal pleasure is abuse of drugs.” Drug abuse is the unlawful or improper use of drugs, which includes illegal substances that, when taken into the living organism, can affect one or more of its functions.
The problem of drugs and drug abuse has gotten so severe. There is hardly a day when you open up a newspaper or listen to the news without hearing about drug usage or location offences.
The current global audience is witnessing a continued increase in drug usage and trafficking among moms or women, particularly pregnant mothers.
It has been around for decades, but in recent years it has expanded at an alarming rate beyond social, economic, and political country boundaries.
The most commonly abused drugs among pregnant women include alcohol, tobacco, barbiturates, inhalants, and so on. Prolonged or periodic intoxication is harmful to expectant mothers and other members of society.
The drug users believe that the substances make them stronger, more confident, and in control of their lives or emotions. The sensation is so pleasurable that one is tempted to misuse it.
The medications’ adverse effects cause people to feel uncomfortable, confused, and suffer from a variety of additional issues such as paranoia, hallucinations, and psychosis. Researchers have also discovered that drug use can permanently harm one’s health and trigger health attacks and strokes.
It has also been established that medications cause many babies to be born prematurely, as well as diseases, killers, and utrus, which are transmitted from the mother to the foetus.
However, pregnant mothers (women) have their causes for participating in drug misuse, prominent among which are said problems such as deprivation, negligence, broken homes, and so on. Emotional and psychological stress can cause anxiety, frustration, and economic depression.
1.2 The purpose of the study
Drug usage is one of Nigeria’s most significant social concerns today, and it has become a common topic of discussion throughout the country. The goal of this study is to look into the effects of drug misuse on women and pregnant mothers.
• Determine the prevalence and amount of drug intake among pregnant moms.
· To educate moms about the consequences of drug use.
• Investigate the causes and solutions of drug usage among pregnant women.
· In addition to tips, I aim to provide readers with relevant information and research suggestions for mothers.
1.3 Statement of the Problem
Pregnant women have been observed abusing drugs such as alcohol, tobacco, and barbiturates in order to cope with social issues such as deprivation, negligence, broken homes, and so on.
Drug misuse has a significant impact on their health, resulting in the birth of preterm babies, linked babies, and babies with a variety of handicapping illnesses.
These babies will become a problem for society as a whole as they grow up. They would be described as having issues, being dependent on bread, and so on. The government would like to care for them because they are liabilities to society and drain its economy.
The researchers are thus interested in examining if the preceding assumption is true, and if not, to what extent, and making recommendations to alleviate it.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The study’s significance lies in its ability to prevent drug-abusing mothers from using drugs. The emphasis should be on preventing and eventually controlling it. Once finished, this study will emphasise the frequency of drug addiction among pregnant women.
Another important aspect of this study is to lower the high prevalence of broken homes, mentally ill children, and children. The study will focus on educating individuals involved or mothers who have become involved about the vulnerability of this habit.
Its purpose is to serve as a complement to social discipline and a source of information from which policies will be developed to address drug misuse problems and concerns in our society.
Finally, expectant mothers, as members of the nation, play an important part in economic emancipation by contributing to our growth through the use of pharmaceuticals that allow them to live a decent and productive life.
1.5 Hypothesis.
The hypothesis of the study includes the following:
· Pregnant mothers utilise or abuse drugs.
· Pregnant mothers can consume drugs without harming their health.
· Pregnant moms’ drug usage affects their unborn babies.
· Pregnant moms’ drug intake has no influence on their families.
· There is no significant link between drug intake by pregnant moms and deviant behaviour in society.
