EFFECT OF HARVESTING FREQUENCY ON LEAF AND POD YIELD OF FLUTED PUMPKIN IN OWERRI WEST, IMO STATE
Abstract
The significance of pumpkins with flutes to rural household economies cannot be overstated. Farmers in South-South Nigeria rely heavily on fluted pumpkins for several applications. Production is hindered by a multitude of obstacles, climate change is one of the most notable.
The study evaluated the consequences of climate change and the adaptation strategies employed by fluted pumpkin producers in Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria. Respondents for the study were selected using a multistage sampling method. Six of the twelve communities that make up Ikwerre LGA were picked at random, and 180 fluted pumpkin farmers were selected proportionally from those six communities.
To obtain in-depth information from respondents, an interview schedule and a focus group discussion were used. We examined the data using percentage, frequency count, and mean. For data display, tables and charts were used. The study revealed that 51 percent of respondents were female, the majority were married (77 percent), and the vast majority were full-time farmers (79 percent).
A relatively substantial minority (42%) had no formal education, and the majority (79%) cited consumption and selling as their primary production goals. According to the respondents, the most significant effects of climate change on fluted pumpkin production were unpredictability of climate conditions, changes in rainfall pattern and distribution, decreased yield of fluted pumpkin, and decreased family income.
The most prevalent adaptation method employed by respondents was the combination of fluted pumpkin production and other income-generating activities. On the basis of the study’s findings, it was advised that people have access to improved extension services that can supply the necessary farming inputs (fluted pumpkin seedlings, fertilizers, etc.) as well as valuable and pertinent information on climate change and adaptation techniques.
