Organisational health and safety standards are designed to promote and maintain the highest level of physical, mental, and social well-being for workers in all industries that have an impact on employee health.

In today’s globalised world, developing countries like Nigeria have a competitive advantage due to lower labour costs. Labour costs have become an essential consideration in product and service development, as most businesses strive to maximise efficiency from their workforce and equipment.

Lehtinen (2001) argued that health and safe working conditions improve productivity and thus help developing countries become competitive in the globalised world economy, which is why many organisations are working to ensure that health and safety is effectively managed at the workplace.

According to Hughes (2007), health is the protection of people’s bodies and minds against work-related illnesses. He also defined safety as the protection of individuals from bodily harm.

Hughes (2007), on the other hand, defined health and safety as the welfare of workers, or the protection of facilities to sustain persons’ health and well-being at work.

Cole (2002) defines safety hazards as features of the workplace that have the potential to cause immediate violent harm to an employee, whereas health hazards gradually and cumulatively deteriorate an individual’s health.

Productivity is defined as how much individuals can produce in a specific time period with the least amount of labour and resources. It is also a ratio that assesses how well a business allocates resources to goods and services.

The work environment refers to the situations, influences, stress, competitive, cultural, demographic, economic regulation, and technological variables that affect an organization’s existence, operations, and growth.

According to Sundstrom et al. (1994), the majority of people spend around 70% of their lives at work, which has a significant impact on their mental state, behaviours, abilities, and performance.

Better outcomes and increased productivity are considered to arise from a better workplace environment. Research suggests that discontent, messy offices, and physical surroundings all contribute to decreased employee productivity (Carnevale, 1992).

The purpose of businesses implementing health and safety programmes is to nurture a safe and risk-free work environment for employees and stakeholders in general, ensuring personnel efficiency and, as a result, maximising productivity.

Productivity has been an important contributor to company success since occupational health and safety has a direct impact on cost savings and profitability. An uncomfortable work environment can have a negative impact on worker motivation, leading to less effort at work and lower performance.

 

The rubber industry is regarded as one of the most dangerous working conditions for employees. Workers face a variety of risks, including the use of chemicals, sophisticated machines and working tools, odour, noise, manufacturing waste, unprotected machinery, poor fire precautions, and, in many cases, working under pressure for high output.

 

Health and safety standards are extremely important in the industrial industry because many employees have died and others have suffered varying degrees of injury as a result of accidents.

While education and expertise are crucial for safe work and accident prevention, employees’ aptitude and approach also play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy work environment. According to Casio (1996), it is simple to avoid the safe approach to work, yet it frequently leads to an accident.
