effect of heavy rainfall in lagos metropolis

1.1 Background of the Study

According to Ugbodaga (2015), the Lagos State government has cautioned citizens to prepare for heavy rains and recommended flood-prone communities to evacuate as soon as they see a slow accumulation of rising waters.

The authorities warned citizens to be attentive and prepared for the repercussions of flooding caused by heavy rains late in the day; it would also happen in other parts of the country.

Ugbodaga also stated that the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment reiterated the importance of ensuring the free flow of rainwater into drains in order to avoid the consequences of the Nigerian Metrological Agency’s (NIMET) report, which predicted heavy rainfall for Lagos State, among other things.

Similarly, Onisarotu (2015) underlined that the rainy season was not finished and urged Lagosians to clean and clear the drains in front of and around their homes on a regular basis. ”

People should not panic when it rains since they will begin to notice collected water concentrations on various portions of the roads and highways, depending on the severity of the rain. We tell you that the flood will recede quickly,” Onisarotu stated.

Ugbodaga (2015) also stated that any flash floods observed during the rains would be discharged in no time due to the efficacy of our drainage channels.

Residents residing along flood plains, low line areas, and other coast lines such as Ajegunle, Owode-Onirin axis, Owode-Elelede, Kuramo beach, Alpha beach, Okun-mapo, OkunAjah, Ijora-Badia, Iwaya, and other low line areas should be extremely careful and may need to vacate their residence temporarily once they notice gradual accumulation of rising water and move to higher grounds as the state is not ready to lose any life during the rainy period (Ugbod According to Onisarotu (2015), Lagosians should prioritise safety during the rainy season and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.

In the same vein, Lagosians should exercise caution when driving, avoid overspeeding, and keep their vehicles in good condition. Do not drive through flooded regions because it may be difficult to determine the depth.

Plan your route before going out to avoid unwanted excursions. The State Government made it clear that it will continue to increase its cleaning and repair campaign and will not stop until the zero tolerance standards for flooding are met.

We urge the people of the state to help the government in making the state flood-free, as the administration works tirelessly to reduce flooding,” Onisarotu added.

However, over the last four decades, economic losses from natural hazards such as flood disasters have increased dramatically, resulting in significant loss of human lives and livelihoods, destruction of economic and social infrastructure, and environmental damage (Munich, 2012).

Flooding might be considered one of the most prevalent natural disasters in the globe. Floods are a type of natural hazard caused by the possibility for catastrophic geographical phenomena to pose an unforeseen threat to human life and property (Smith, 2011).

When catastrophic floods occur in human-populated areas, they can cause natural disasters that result in the loss of human life and property, as well as significant interruption to the ongoing activities of big urban and rural communities (Smith and Ward, 2010).
