CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study

Students at four-year colleges and universities participate in industrial training to prepare them for the workforce and the roles they will play in human resource development.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) program established the Industrial Training Funds to assist students in tertiary institutions, particularly those offering practical courses like Engineering, Art and Applied Sciences, Office Technology and Management, and so on, in acquiring the necessary training skills for their future careers.

The students have benefited greatly from this programme. Industrial training exposes managers to industrial behaviour, which improves the practical component of their course, which is important because managers are responsible for providing service to the general public.

The lack of practical components in the classroom, according to Okafor (1993), could be remedied by exposing students to the real world of work through this type of experience.

This means that Office Managers can advance in their careers with the support of the Industrial Training Fund’s programs. Examples of theoretically taught courses in the field of office technology and management include office practice, human capital management, information and communication technology (ICT), advance transcription, principles of law, and office management system.

As part of their first year at a polytechnic, office managers are required to complete four months of industrial training (IT). Then, in their second year, they return for a full year of IT, during which they will get the knowledge and experience they need to excel in their degree program.

As long as the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) program is ongoing, the skills and knowledge students gain while training will undoubtedly serve them well in their managerial roles.

The opportunities presented to students in the Office Management and Technology course serve as a powerful means by which they can respond to a fundamental component of their own growth and development, thereby acquiring the requisite abilities.

Unemployment was the biggest issue that students were dealing with prior to the implementation of Industrial Training (IT). Students are confronted with the challenge of gaining the necessary practical knowledge, and a large number of them lack the relevant and employable skills that companies need.

Thus, encouraging the pupils to conceptualise the concepts being taught. However, with the implementation of this IT curriculum, office managers have been able to do a better job, particularly when it comes to applying what they’ve learnt in class to real-world situations.

Goals of SIWES include assisting students in resolving the issue of unemployment, empowering students to confidently and joyfully embark on their professional journeys, and preparing students for success in the global community.

Students who have taken advantage of SIWES possibilities are prepared to take on any professional skill challenge, according to Taylor (1983). Because of this, the industrial training fund program provided the prospective managers who participated with the necessary exposure and experiences.

1.2.1 Statement Of The Problem

How to reach the organization’s objective is the management challenge of industrial training. According to Folayan (1998), a prerequisite for the accomplishment of an organization’s corporate objective is the work of competent managers. It was disheartening to see the Office Manager’s demeanour and academic performance before the Industrial Training Scheme was implemented.

The Office Manager’s education is structured on this program (IT) that the Federal Military Government instituted to ensure the efficient and correct performance of their duties.

Office managers require immediate training beginning in their first year of college to keep up with the demand for information technology in any company, as Atuenyi (1995) pointed out.

The frequency of supervision staff visits to students on attachment and the amount of allowance granted to students on attachment are two related issues.

1.3 The Objectives of the Study

The study’s overarching goal is to ascertain how the Industrial Training Scheme influenced the education of future office managers.

The study’s stated goals were to:

1. Determine what you hope to accomplish during your Industrial Training.

2. Determine the advantages that the Industrial Training (IT) Scheme provides to all students.

Third, figure out why the program was poorly executed.

4. Analyse the solutions to the program’s poor execution.

1.4 Research Questions

The following questions guided this investigation.

First and foremost, what is the purpose of the Industrial Training?

Second, how does the Industrial Training Scheme help students?

3. Why has the program’s implementation been so inadequate?

4. How can we fix the problems caused by the program’s bad execution?

1.5  Research Hypothesis

In order to strengthen the subject matter’s authentication, the following hypothesis has been developed to direct the study.

It is not true that the Industrial Training Scheme influences the education of

Office managers at a few universities in Nigeria’s southeastern zone.

Claim 1: The Industrial Training Scheme influences the education of

Office managers at a few universities in Nigeria’s southeastern zone.

1.6 The significance Of The Study

Students will benefit from the practical component of learning, which will enhance their theoretical training, by studying the impact of industrial training schemes on management training.

Students will be more invested in the curriculum after completing industrial training, rather than slacking off and forging industrial training letters from any organisation.

By making it mandatory for students to gain the practical information and experience needed from them during their training, it helps SIWES staff become more devoted to their work. Students will learn to be frugal while interacting with clients or using business supplies in this class.

In order to gain acceptance as industrial workers, the study will also aid in raising public and governmental understanding of the significance of training.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The impact of an industrial training program on the education of office managers is the exclusive focus of this research. Particularly relevant to the education of future office managers was the emphasis on the goals and purposes of industrial training schemes aimed at students enrolled in vocational programs at universities. With the goal of determining the training’s efficacy and the issues plaguing it, as well as the advantages gained by pupils
