INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Services account for a large portion of company production and investments. Management Information Systems (MIS) are used to facilitate the services, which account for a significant amount of corporate spending.

The goal of such investments is to generate corporate value. However, for any investment to have a beneficial influence on business value, more revenues must be generated or overall costs lowered.

Thus, when considering investments in services that have the potential to improve business performance, the interconnections of costs among various business processes and activities must be examined (Roztocki & Weistroffer, 2008).

Investment in information technology can have a significant impact on both the internal and external operations of a corporate organisation, as well as academic institutions.

Internally, improved IT systems can improve and reinforce organisational infrastructure and capability by enhancing personnel efficiency, service coordination, information sharing between departments, financial record keeping, and monitoring an organization’s production and impact.

Externally, information technology solutions have the potential to significantly change the way commercial organisations supply services.

Statement of the Problem

The problem of the study lies in the fact that the University of Uyo has not accommodated the change towards the use of technology in performing its functions and operations;

it rather remained in the same position away from progress and excellence, due to the intensification of competition between private and public organisations as a result of the multiplicity and diversity of services and organisations that provide such services on the one hand, and the high level of their

The use of technology has many positive and effective benefits that are reflected on the organisation itself, such as technological development, competition, the desire to improve work, and others, which have a variety of outcomes and results on the organisation, both at the level of work and services provided.

So the study’s difficulty is demonstrated by a lack of awareness and knowledge of the impact of management information systems technology and quality on the services given by the University of Uyo in AkwaIbom State, Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary goal of this paper is to assess the impact of management information systems on service delivery in Nigeria’s academic institutions.

The study also attempts to evaluate how the internet facility has contributed to online interaction within the university community, and it finally assesses the impediments to management information system development.

Research Questions
How does a management information system affect service delivery in Nigerian academic institutions?

How has the internet facility facilitated online connection within the university community?

What are the inhibiting elements of management information system development?

1.5 Research Hypotheses.

Ho: Management information systems have no substantial impact on service delivery in Nigeria’s academic institutions.

Hi:The management information system has no substantial effect on service delivery in Nigerian academic institutions.

1.6 Significance of the Study

University administrators throughout the world are increasing their investment in information technology (IT), particularly web technology and the Internet, to carry out operations such as teaching, student registration, and test processing (Yang, 2008; Ting, 2005; Chen & Paul, 2003; Huang et al, 2004).

Similarly, teachers and students use the Internet to communicate. Lecturers are being asked to make their instructional materials available online on the institution’s websites for students to access. Students are encouraged to contact with lecturers and one another via email (Chenug and Huang, 2005).

As a result, researchers, resource managers, and other stakeholders must consider how management information systems affect service delivery and economic value.

Productivity enhancement, profitability improvement, improved work relations, competitive advantage, and efficient use of resources are all benefits of management information systems and service delivery at both the intermediate and organisational levels (Prasad 2008; Melville et al., 2004; Devaraj 2003; and Kohli 2003).

While institutions invest heavily in IT resources in both developing and developed countries, little emphasis has been paid to understanding how IT adds value to businesses in poor countries.

Many discoveries from affluent countries are of low use to developing-country stakeholders (Prasad 2008). The question of the payoffs of IT investments in emerging countries is critical for company executives and academic scholars.

It has been observed that there is insufficient study on the impact of IT investments on business value and service performance in organisations (Roztocki et al., 2004).

Understanding the impact of IT investments to company value and service delivery in developing nations can give investors greater confidence and direction for their IT investments (Prasad 2008).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study employed the University of Uyo as a case study. The study

Identifies how management information systems affect academic and administrative tasks such as lecture delivery and examination processing.

Limitations of study

Financial constraints- Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing relevant resources, literature, or information, as well as in data collecting (internet, questionnaire, and interview).

Time constraints: The researcher will conduct this investigation while also working on other academic projects. This will reduce the amount of time spent on research.

1.8 Definition of Terms

A management information system (MIS) is a computerised database of financial information that is organised and programmed to provide regular operational reports for all levels of management in a firm.

Service Delivery is a business component that describes the interaction between providers and customers in which the supplier provides a service, such as information or a task, and the client either gains or loses value as a result.
