EFFECT OF MANAGEMENT STYLES ON WORKERS PRODUCTIVITY IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY

CHAPITRE ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE SUBJECT MATTER

It has been observed that the efficiency and productivity level of personnel in any organisation is greatly influenced by how well the organisation is managed. In the modern era, man has always aimed his efforts at ensuring that the concept of management is not tossed to the winds, and he does so in order to improve organisational changes and experience optional production.

Furthermore, according to Ejiofor (1987), management is the process of getting this through and with people, and to make this happen in an organisation, the concept of management becomes the point on which the organisation normally revolves.

However, the research argues that the hotel sector is one of these organisations where the notion of products management is a pre-requisite for the workers’ effective and efficient performance. This is because great production can only be achieved when staff are efficient and effective.

As a result, the management style used by people in charge of the hotel business has an impact on worker productivity. This is because when the manager or leader is successful and efficient, the workers under him will be effective and efficient as well. When the opposite is true, the result is inefficiency, poor performance, and low productivity.

There is little doubt that the hotel industry is an important sector in the nation’s economic structure, considering the amount of money invested in it by either a single individual who owns the enterprise or by the government. And, given that the hotel sector is a profit-oriented organisation, it is obvious that if the productivity level of the workforce is not encouraging.

The likelihood that the aims established will not be realised. We understand the ramifications of inefficiency or low production in any organisation. Terry stated that an inefficient organisation is one that operates with wastes or carelessness and does not provide work satisfaction, has no cleanliness of authority and no proper exaction of responsibilities and does not allow for appropriate participation in problem solving, provides no room for security and status,

and does not provide opportunity for personal and competitive pay rates. All of this is possible if one criterion is met: a good management style. A close examination of many organisations, including the hotel industry, reveals that the management style employed by those in charge is characterised by favouritism,

inability to delegate, inability to decentralise authority, poor communication with subordinates, inability to allow employees to participate in decision making, and, most importantly, inability to motivate workers for greater productivity.

The question therefore becomes, how far and to what extent do management styles influence employees in organisations such as the hotel industry? In response to the foregoing, the issue of the effect of management style on worker productivity in the hotel business in Enugu State was introduced.

1.2 PROBLEM RELATED TO THE SUBJECT

It has been observed that several organisations in our country have had numerous challenges over the years. Many national reasoning citizens believe that many disparities have been observed in the performance level of most organisations. This observation is not far from the truth, especially when comparing one organisation to its counterparts in the same line of business.

Studies have shown that in recent times, most organisations have not met their demise due to poor management. For example, in Enugu State, most hotel industries have either gone out of business or are on the verge of collapse due to poor management.

As a result, several of them have performed so poorly that they have found it unable to pay their employees’ salaries due to low productivity. Thus, low productivity has resulted in inefficiency and low morale among workers.

However, one of the leading causes of low productivity in the hotel industry is the management style employed by either the owners or those in charge of affairs.

Events have demonstrated that in organisations with good management styles such as allowing workers to participate in decision making, delegation of authority and responsibility, the practise of management by objective (PTBO), good communication with subordinates, and so on, workers have a sense of belonging and put in their best effort in terms of productivity.

When the opposite is true, there are always instances of worker inefficiency and low production. This disparity in organisational performance (particularly in the hotel industry) aims to identify an issue “the effect of management style on worker productivity in the hotel industry Enugu state.” As a result, the study attempts to investigate the topic matter.

1.3 THE PROBLEM WITH WHICH THE STUDY WILL BE CONCERNED

The study focused on the impact of management styles used or practised in the hotel business on worker productivity. There are several reasons why an organisation such as the hotel sector is founded, including the desire to give services to the public in order to generate a profit and, most importantly, to act as a source of employment for the unemployed citizenry. Based on this, the study’s objectives are armed;

(i) Investigate the management style used in the hotel chosen for the study.

(ii) Determining the causes responsible for the poor performance of a few selected hotels in Enugu State.

(iii) Investigating the extent to which efficient management practises exist in the hotel business.

(iv) Identifying the type of management problem that is impeding the achievement of the goal of establishing the hotel business.

1.4 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is vital to remember that the focus of this research was on the hotel business in Enugu State. It is also worth noting the study. It is also worth noting that the study was conducted to investigate the influence of management styles on worker output.

As a result of this research, the researcher will be able to sketch out the organisational principles, assess the organisational system or structure of the hotel industry, and give recommendations that will help many organisations, including the hotel industry.

This research will also aid in identifying the variables responsible for structural gaps and functional overlaps in the hotel business, both of which are the result of poor and ineffective management.

Furthermore, this study is significant since it will allow the researcher to provide recommendations to the hotel sector in order for them to reach the goals for which they were formed.

The study is relevant because the findings and subsequent recommendations would be very important to another organisation that may be facing inefficiency and low productivity on the part of their staff as a result of the management style that they have selected.

Finally, this study would contribute to the academic development of theories of management styles, and so would be highly beneficial to fellow students and academics, particularly those who may like to conduct more research on this subject area.

1.4 IMPORTANT DEFINITION OF TERMS

According to Osuala (1983:58), “an adequate statement of the problem is also very carefully defined.” It is necessary for a research project due to the scope of its scope. Based on the foregoing, the scope of this study included two hotels in Enugu State. These two hotels were chosen for this investigation.
