ABSTRACT

In 2007, Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) introduced prepayment metres to Nigerian consumers. It was broadly accepted by consumers because they assumed that the era of estimated billing had ended, but they were shocked to learn that (PHCN) was stockpiling the metres and selling them to the highest bidder.

This development has sparked numerous disputes even now. Those who were fortunate enough to acquire their own are reaping the benefits. They regarded the PHCN’s idea as commendable. In light of the foregoing, the researcher conducted an investigation into the impact of prepaid metres in the service business, utilising PHCN Enugu as the case study.

The project was organised into four chapters. The first chapter included the introduction, research importance, problem statement, and study objective, among other things. Again, chapter two included a literature review.

The researcher looked at other publications on the topic of debate by seasoned authors. Again, journals from the PHCN were used. While chapters three and four comprised the research design, methods, summary of findings, and suggestions.Chapter one

1.1 Background of the Study

Electronic prepaid metres are electronic devices that allow energy consumers to pay for electricity before using it. In 2007, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) launched the use of prepaid metres to provide Nigerian consumers with device satisfaction for their money. The advent of the new technology was widely noted; at the very least, it will put a stop to the use of analogue metres that existed prior to 2007.

Many people expected the PHCN to act quickly to ensure that the metres were distributed around the country, but the opposite is true, as just a few Nigerians have had the new metres placed.

The population is still waiting for PHCH to make available the metres, but nothing appears to be occurring. The impact of this development is seen by both consumers and PHNC.

On the PHCN side, they are losing a lot of cash because, with the new equipment in place, unjust billing will no longer be sent to the consumer, and they appear to be making nothing whenever the energy is supplied.

Another benefit is that PHCH’s administrative overhead would be reduced once the new energy payment metres are fully deployed in most parts of Nigeria.

Because this new watering system is electronic, the majority of the tasks involved in its operation can be automated. This will lower staff requirements and, as a result, staff over-lead. In the second phase of this project, we will go over the benefits of prepaid metres for both PHCN and Nigerian consumers.

1.2 Statement Problem

Prepaid metres are new to Nigeria’s electronic consumers. Part of the reason it was introduced in 1007 was to provide the electronic consumer with value for the money they pay to PHCH. As the expression goes, nothing good lasts forever in Nigeria.

As soon as the new technology was deployed, the effect was noticed by the PHCH. Rather than being a positive development, it demonstrates that being in the business halted the circulation of prepaid metres because they realised they would not cut shortcuts in the fulfilment of their obligations.

The original group of folks who received the metre are still seeking their blessing today. Those who met lucky are still suffering now. We discovered that those who have a prepaid metre have peace of mind because the system provides projected bills rather than paying as they consume.

 

Again, the introduction of the new metre has prompted PHCH to provide more light to the made regions with prepaid metres. This is true since they will not make much money while there is no power in certain locations. This will have an impact on their revenue generation because the number of credit card purchases would fall.

The effects of this prepayment metre will be discussed throughout the project.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The aims that motivated the researcher to pursue this topic are as follows.

i. To investigate the impact of prepaid metres on service industries such as PHCH.

ii. To explain whether electronic consumers prefer prepaid metres over analogue metres.

iii. Find out why the prepaid metre is in low supply.

iv. To understand why PHCN less failed to provide consistent power despite the significant investment in the project.

v. Determine whether the prepaid metre enhanced or diminished PHCN’s income generation.

vi. Make suggestions and recommendations that can help solve the identified difficulties.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The importance of this study is to achieve great success in contributing whatever the researcher can, if not a considerable deal, to determining the influence of prepaid metres in PHCN.

This project will result in improved service delivery since the researchers will educate PHCN on the importance of providing high-quality service to its consumers.

It is hoped that this research would educate energy users about the importance of welcoming the introduction of the new prepaid metre.

Furthermore, it will result in more obvious contributions and improvements to PHCN’s headquarters and other locations across the country. Furthermore, this study will be of increased benefit to students, particularly those conducting research on the same or comparable topics.

1.6 Definition of Term

Consumers are individuals or households who purchase a certain product for personal, home, or industrial usage.

Patronise: The preference for a specific product or brand of one’s choosing.

PHCN is an acronym for Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
