EFFECT OF TWITTER BAN ON THE ECONOMY OF NIGERIA

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The internet has transformed the way we communicate with others as well as the process of exchanging information and knowledge (Sobowale, Amodu, Aririguzoh, and Ekanem, 2015).

According to Oyero (2007), the internet has had a considerable impact on society, industry, and government.Significantly, the internet, particularly social media, has boosted socioeconomic growth and development in both developed and developing countries.

According to Amodu (2008), the introduction of ICTs in any community or nation typically results in unprecedented levels of transformation.

According to Oso (2011), one of the requirements for social media is that they be viewed as a strategic tool for economic improvement, which means that they may contribute to a nation’s cultural, human, social, political, and economic development. Twitter is one of the social media sites that promote economic development.

Twitter is a medium for obtaining knowledge, gathering information, and facilitating interpersonal interactions. This has improved human lives in a variety of ways. Twitter is regarded as a marketplace for ideas and creativity (Danbatta, 2017).

Twitter’s impact on humans and society has expanded beyond information transmission, becoming a major communication force in politics, economics, religion, and education (Onyejelem, Ude-Akpeh, & Uduma, 2015).

Businesses that want to grow, expand, and generate income must engage in communication ads to win existing and new customers. To reach potential customers, they require brand recognition and development, which may be achieved through the use of social media platforms.

To this purpose, corporate and non-corporate enterprises in Nigeria have mostly used Twitter to carry out operational tasks, resulting in their growth and development.

Twitter has also provided revenue for many Nigerian youngsters who engage in one or more business activities on the platform. Furthermore, the presence of Twitter in Nigeria has in recent years increased foreign investment in the country.

However, as of June 5, 2021, Nigeria joined other governments in suspending Twitter service in its own country. Following the Federal Government’s indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria on June 5, 2021, as announced by Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, global voices have reacted in a variety of ways regarding the implications of such a ban on the country’s fledgling economy (Vanguard news.com).

As a result, the unexpected economic consequences of the Nigerian government’s erratic choice prompted this study. The purpose of this study is to investigate and examine the impact of the Twitter ban on Nigeria’s economy.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Highlighting the repercussions of the Twitter ban in Nigeria, the suspension is expected to have its own set of severe consequences on an economy that is now struggling to find its footing (Vanguard, 2021).

According to the online daily, “The restriction would have an impact on economic activities, some of which provide cash for millions of young Nigerians. The suspension will also have an impact on online news platforms that use Twitter to broaden their reach and offer news to more people.

The suspension will reduce data income for telecommunications, as Twitter remains one of Nigeria’s most popular social media networks. It further asserted that the site had created job chances for young Nigerians. “With the success of the social media platform, an increasing number of young Nigerian influencers are being recruited by public relations firms to promote products.

As a result, Twitter’s suspension will disrupt their revenue streams and reduce the reach of these brands.” Aside from the areas stated above, the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria is expected to have an impact on other important sectors. As a result, these serve as the foundation for this investigation.

1.3 Goal of the Study

The broad purpose of this study is to assess the effect of the Twitter ban on the Nigerian economy; below are the enumerated particular objectives of the study.

Identify the sectors/areas affected by the Twitter ban in Nigeria.

Outline the harmful impact of the restriction on such sectors.

Determine whether a Twitter ban has a detrimental impact on unemployment in Nigeria.

1.4 Research question.

The study will be driven by the following questions:

What areas in Nigeria have been affected by the Twitter ban?

What are the negative consequences of the ban on such sectors?

Has the Twitter ban increased unemployment in Nigeria?
