ABSTRACT

The primary goal of this research is to determine how secretarial performance is impacted by the use of new communication tools in certain manufacturing companies, with a focus on NB Plc-Enugu. There are a total of four chapters in this study, and each one covers the topic thoroughly and in detail. Nonetheless, the study used percentages to assess the data acquired and nine research questions were developed. Information for this study came from a variety of sources, including an interview guide, a questionnaire, a small number of relevant books, and previous research. According to the research, contemporary communication technology is essential for a secretary’s job. Office equipment has been evolving since the seventeenth century and is still going strong now. The purpose of this research is to identify the most up-to-date forms of office communication technology used by manufacturing companies, as well as the secretary’s proficiency with these tools, her level of job satisfaction, the difficulties she faces while using them, and the extent to which these tools have improved her efficiency on the job. In conclusion, this study used a total of 100 respondents, 60 secretaries and 40 bosses, drawn from five manufacturing enterprises located in Enugu State, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION

 

Background of the Study

Two things must be acknowledged when talking about how contemporary communication tools affect the efficiency of secretarial work in companies. Technological progress and organisational structure.

She has to know how to operate the state-of-the-art communication tools designed to boost her efficiency.

Modern office equipment was born out of the need to accommodate expanding large-scale businesses and new technical developments. Exploring uncharted territories is important to Nigeria Breweries. They worry a lot about their company’s future. Tomorrow must be accomplished via strategic activities, planning, and execution.

With the help of Heineken International and the capable and visionary leadership of their former and current directors and chief executives, Nigerian Breweries Plc is able to take a forward-thinking approach to doing business.

A state in Enugu recently cited a multi-billion Naira ultra-modern brewery, boasting that it is a world-class investment with state-of-the-art communication, manufacturing, and delivery equipment that can compete with any other out-fit anywhere in the globe.

Computers in every office at Nigerian Breweries plc are only one example of how the company’s investment in cutting-edge technology has improved secretarial efficiency.

Despite the fact that upper-level management may not rely much on technological advancements in the workplace, it appears that the secretary will. Instead of focussing on the less critical tasks of typing and stenography, this secretarial office automation system equips the secretary with a tool to address the actual, prioritised needs of the job.

There are a lot more things to do in a modern office with the help of technology than in a traditional office. Secretaries are present to operate these machines, which countless manufacturing businesses have placed, so that they can carry out their tasks efficiently and successfully.

Efficient work performance is of the utmost significance. A review of the many types of office labour, the number of people employed in these fields, and the effects of automation provides sufficient evidence to support the pursuit of greater efficiency and productivity. In terms of technical innovation, the secretarial profession has seen considerable change.

The rapid development of scientific and technological capabilities has had a significant impact on modern office equipment, which is utilised in manufacturing industries to streamline office tasks and cut down on labour expenses.

All sorts of electronic devices fall under this category, such as dictation and recording machines, computers, fax machines, telephones, and electronic typewriters.

Thus, this study aims to determine how secretaries at NB Plc – Enugu are affected by the use of modern office equipment.

1. The degree to which secretaries’ ability to carry out their jobs in NB-P Enugu has been improved by the use of modern office equipment.

2. The precision of the tasks performed by means of these tools.

3. The amount of time required to complete a task with these tools.

4. The installation of this equipment results in a decrease in cost.

5. How these tools make the secretary’s workday easier and more enjoyable.

6. Secretaries’ employment stability after purchasing these state-of-the-art workplace communication tools

1:4 Delimtations of the study

To determine how modern office equipment affects secretaries’ performance on the job, this study will only look at NB Plc – Enugu and other manufacturing businesses in Enugu state. Participants in the NB plc Enugu study will fall into the following categories:

One, designated secretaries in the employ

Those whose jobs have been supplanted by computers and other forms of modern office machinery

3. Manager.

3. Members of the operational team.

1.5 Research Questions 

The researcher formulated the following questions to help her draw conclusions, such as:

i. To what extent has the use of contemporary office machinery improved the effectiveness of secretarial work in the manufacturing sector, and more specifically at NB plc-Enugu?

ii) How much helping hand has this technology given the secretary as she has carried out her responsibilities?

iii) To what extent is the work performed by these machines precise and high-quality in the manufacturing sector?

iv. What issues do secretaries face when utilising these contemporary workplace tools?

Secretaries will find the study’s findings useful in their work, and the findings will undoubtedly inspire the IT industry to introduce cutting-edge improvements in office automation.
