Effects of Voice Email System in Visual Impaired Students Academic Achievement in Junior Secondary School Computer Studies

 

Abstract

 

This study investigated the effects of a voice email system on the academic achievement of visually impaired students in junior high school computer courses.

Three objectives were raised, which included: determining the level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies before the introduction of a voice email system, knowing the level of academic achievement of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies after the introduction of a voice email system, and determining the perceptions of visually impaired students towards the use of a voice email system.

A total of 77 responses were received and authenticated from enrolled participants, with all coming from chosen secondary schools in Ibadan. The hypothesis was investigated using the Chi-Square statistical program (SPSS).

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The use of technology in education has grown in recent years, and one area where it has had a considerable impact is on the lives of visually impaired pupils. One such tool is the voice email system, which can assist these students in their academic pursuits, particularly in computer science.Andzayi, C.A. (2002)

A voice email system has the potential to significantly improve the academic performance of visually impaired students in junior secondary school computer courses.

The voice email system can assist these students with staying on track with their assignments and connecting with their teachers and classmates by providing an accessible and convenient mode of communication.Adeya, T. M. (2004)

One of the primary benefits of the voice email system is that it allows visually challenged students to receive course materials, assignments, and teacher comments in audio format, making them easier to understand and process. This is especially significant in computer studies, because much of the material may be conveyed visually.Ajayi, G. O. 2002.

The voice email system can also assist visually impaired students in working with their classmates on group assignments, which can be difficult without the ability to see visual clues.

Visually impaired students can contribute to group discussions and share their thoughts with their peers by communicating by voice email, so fostering a more inclusive learning environment.Becker, E and Andy, E (1999)

Furthermore, the voice email system can be especially valuable in circumstances where visually impaired students need to ask questions or get clarification from their teachers outside of class.

By sending a voice email, these students can receive assistance without having to wait for the next class or rely on someone else to read and answer to their written emails.Decorate, E. (1990).

Overall, using a voice email system can improve the academic performance of visually challenged pupils in junior high school computer courses. By providing an accessible and easy mode of contact, the voice email system can assist these students in remaining connected, engaged, and successful in their studies.

Statement of the Problem

 

The goal of this study is to look at the impact of a voice email system on the academic performance of visually impaired pupils in Junior Secondary School computer courses.

Specifically, the project seeks to answer the following research questions:

What was the academic accomplishment level of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies prior to the implementation of a voice email system?

What is the academic performance of visually challenged students in Junior Secondary School computer studies following the implementation of a voice email system?

What are the views of visually challenged students on the employment of a voice email system in junior secondary school computer studies?

What are teachers’ perspectives on the employment of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer courses for visually impaired students?

What problems do visually impaired pupils face when using a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies?

The study’s goal is to provide insights into the potential benefits and drawbacks of employing a voice email system to assist visually impaired students in their academic performance in computer studies. The findings could help educators and policymakers develop successful instructional strategies and accommodations for visually impaired students in computer studies.

The objectives of the study

 

To determine the degree of academic accomplishment of visually impaired pupils in Junior Secondary School computer studies prior to the implementation of a voice email system.

To determine the level of academic accomplishment of visually impaired pupils in Junior Secondary School computer studies following the implementation of a voice email system.

To determine the perceptions of visually challenged pupils on the employment of a voice email system in Junior Secondary School computer studies.

Research Hypotheses

Research hypotheses are formulated.

H1: There is no level of academic accomplishment of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies prior to the implementation of a voice email system.

H2: There is no level of academic accomplishment of visually impaired students in Junior Secondary School computer studies since the implementation of a voice email system.

Significance of the Study

This study will be important for students and policymakers. The study will provide a good understanding of the effects of a voice email system on visual impaired pupils’ academic progress in junior secondary school computer courses. The study will also act as a reference for other researchers who would engage on the similar issue.

Scope of the Study

The study’s focus includes the effects of the voice email system on the academic accomplishment of visually impaired pupils in junior secondary school computer courses. The will be limited to a few secondary schools in Ibadan.

Limitations of the study

The study on the Effects of a Voice Email System on Visually Impaired Students’ Academic Achievement in Junior Secondary School Computer Studies may have numerous limitations that may affect the validity and generalisability of the findings. Some of these constraints are:

Small Sample Size: The study may have a small sample size, which could restrict the generalizability of the findings to a larger population. The sample size may not be typical of the greater population of visually challenged kids, hence the findings may not apply to other groups of students.

Lack of Control Group: Without a control group, it may be impossible to identify whether the reported improvements in academic achievement were caused by the voice email system or other factors such as motivation, study habits, or teacher quality.

Short Duration: The study’s duration may be insufficient to assess the long-term benefits of the voice email system on academic accomplishment. A longer investigation could have yielded more credible results.

Limited Scope: The study may only look at the effects of the voice email system on academic performance in computer studies. The findings may not apply to other disciplines or academic areas.

Definition of Terms

Voice email system: The system will present the user with voice commands to execute specific actions, and the user will answer accordingly. The fundamental benefit of this system is that the use of the keyboard is completely eliminated; the user will only have to answer through voice and mouse clicks.

Visual impairment is a phrase used by professionals to describe any type of vision loss, whether someone is completely blind or has partial vision loss. Some people are fully blind, while others have legal blindness.

Academic achievement refers to how far a student or institution has progressed towards short or long-term educational objectives. Students’ grade point averages can be used to measure accomplishment, while graduation rates can be used to measure achievement at institutions.
