INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
According to Flood (2009), young people are constantly exposed to pornography. They come across sexually graphic images on the Internet, some view X-rated videos, and, like adults, they live in a culture saturated with sexualised representations.
This study investigates the possible consequences of young people’s exposure to sexually explicit media. It demonstrates that pornography exposure can cause emotional distress, sexual knowledge and liberalised views, changes in sexual behaviour, and sexist and objectifying beliefs.
The use of pornography, especially among boys and young men, may worsen violence-supportive societal norms and increase sexual assault. This study investigates the effects of pornography on Ikot Ekpene youths.
Television has been shown to have a significant influence on young people’s views, morals, values, and behaviours. Unwanted or teen pregnancy is a common social concern.
Sexual activity among young people has become intermittent. Adolescents are observed to be more sexually active, and this has been related to the detrimental influence of mass media, particularly pornographic films that the young ones are exposed to (Flood 2009, p8).
Pornography is defined as sexually explicit media whose primary purpose is to sexually stimulate the audience (Flood 2009, p3). Sexually explicit products depict genitals and sexual behaviours in open ways (Peter and Valkenburg, 2007).
Children’s and young people’s exposure to pornography is influenced by a highly sexualised cultural milieu. The prevalence and explicitness of sexual content in mainstream media have progressively increased.
More broadly, popular culture has undergone ‘pornographication’. Information and communication technology have enabled new types of pornography production and exchange (Hearn 2006, p. 10).
While different studies define and analyse ‘pornography’ and exposure differently, a substantial number of young people are growing up watching pornographic films, also known as blue films.
According to studies, most adolescents spend the majority of their time watching television and films. They also spend a lot of time surfing, conversing, and watching pornographic films on the Internet.
In the same way, the introduction of films has internationalised the distinct cultures of diverse countries. The globe has become a global village as a result of mass production of visual pictures, movies, television, and other media reaching previously unreached areas (Buerkel 2005, p11).
1.2 Statement of Problem
Today’s youth are routinely exposed to pornography. They come across sexually explicit images on the Internet, watch X-rated videos, and, like adults, live in a culture saturated with sexualised representations. As a result, sexual infections like HIV are more likely to spread.
Furthermore, the circumstance encourages adolescent pregnancy because they want to try what they have seen in pornographic films, and there is a widespread lack of morality among young people regarding sexual concerns.
In light of these issues, this study is being conducted to investigate the impact of seeing pornographic films on students at Holy Child Girls Secondary School and Ritman College, both of which are located in the Ikot Ekpene local government region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The aims of the study are as follows:
1. To determine whether viewing pornographic films has a deleterious impact on youths at Holy Child and Ritman secondary schools in Ikot Ekpene.
2. To see if watching pornographic films increases sexual urges.
3. Determine whether parents teach their children on the consequences of watching pornographic videos.
4. To determine whether youths are influenced by seeing pornographic videos.
1.4 Research Questions.
To meet the aims of the study, the following research questions were developed:
1. Does watching pornographic films have a negative impact on the adolescents at Holy Child and Ritman Secondary Schools in Ikot Ekpene?
2. Does watching pornographic films boost sexual desire?
3. Do parents educate their children about the consequences of watching pornographic films?
4. How do pornographic films influence young people?
1.5 Scope of the Study
This study is only for the youngsters of Ikot Ekpene local government area. It focusses on how watching pornographic materials affects Ikot Ekpene youngsters. It includes students from Holy Child Girls Secondary School and Ritman Secondary School, both in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The significance of the study is as follows. It will highlight the impact of pornography on Ikot Ekpene youngsters. It will aid in the identification of problems related with pornographic materials.
It will also discuss potential solutions to the challenges linked with young people’s exposure to pornographic content. More importantly, the study will act as a resource for students, scholars, and organisations.
Limitations of the Study
The key reasons that posed constraints to the research study were: most respondents were hesitant to provide excellent information regarding research, and often the effort of reaching out to people was futile.
Financial constraints also posed a basic barrier, as the researcher could not afford the expensive cost of travelling to several libraries to gather material.
1.8 Definition of Terms.
Television, radio, and newspapers are examples of mass media.
Movies: A series of real or imaginary events recorded by a camera and displayed onto a screen as a sequence of moving pictures, typically with an accompanying music.
Pornographic materials include films, publications, essays, images, and other things that are sexually explicit and meant to elicit sexual response.
Pornography is sexually explicit and meant to elicit sexual desire.
Television is an electrical device that receives and reproduces images and sounds from a combined audio and visual feed.
Youth: The stage of human life between childhood and maturity.
