ELECTORAL VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA
THE CASE OF ANAMBRA STATE GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS (2003 AND 2007) ELECTORAL VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA
PREFACE
The study looked at the concept of electoral violence as it was interpreted by various analysts of democratic elections. It traced Nigeria’s electoral violence history. It also looked at Electoral Violence in Governorship Elections in 2003 and 2007, with a focus on Anambra State in Nigeria’s South Eastern geopolitical zone.
The elements that contributed to electoral violence in 2003 and 2007 were investigated. The work exposes the various facets of electoral violence manifested before, during, and after the election,
as well as the resulting impacts on lives and property. As a result, the study’s goal is to emphasise that electoral violence, intimidation, corruption, and indiscipline, among other vices, cannot produce a democratic, free, and stable society.
Furthermore, this work emphasised the inefficiency of security agents, as well as their lacklustre roles in previous general elections and the 2003-2007 governorship elections in Anambra State, in order to project the need for their immediate reorientation and equipment for their primary role and importance to national assignment.
The inauguration of a true civilian government has been a mirage for Nigeria as a whole, and Anambra State in particular. The revelation that the unemployed youths of this country,
as ready tools for electoral violence, fall into the hands of the wicked hands of the insensible, selfish, and dare devil profit oriented politicians who regard politics as a do or die affair,
should serve as a turning point for the creation of employment opportunities for the youths in order to cause scarcity and discouragement for the money bag politicians and their godsons,
ensuring peaceful elections. Furthermore, this paper addressed the causes of INEC’s inadequacy as an electoral umpire to organise a commonly pronounced credible, free, and fair election acceptable to the majority of Nigerians, local and international observers.
It is so hoped that the planned electoral reformation, constitutional amendment, and Electoral Law Review will offer INEC full independence, freeing it from any kind of teleguide and enslavement to conduct free, fraudulent, and violent elections for the country Nigeria.
