ELECTRONIC MEDIA USE AND SOCIAL MEDIA DEVELOPMENT

Chapter one

Introduction

Background of the study.
Electronic media is an important part of our daily lives and has a significant impact on society. Electronic media include television, radio, the internet, and e-magazines. Electronic media has many beneficial elements.

Electronic media is the most effective approach to raise awareness in society because everyone relies on some form of electronic media for updates. As the world becomes more complicated and sophisticated, new media technologies are developed.

The development of new media technologies has always been a driver of change in the broadcasting sector. This shift might be traced to the emergence of new media technologies in broadcasting, which was prompted by massive technological advancements.

Advancements in media technology have reduced the time and space barriers in our broadcast sector; they have also made communication easier and more democratic, as well as the development and dissemination of media material.

The emergence of new media technologies, as well as inventive applications of these new and older technologies, allows society to become more informed.

It also facilitates information processing, delivery, storage, and retrieval. As the globe aspires for globalisation, new media technologies are thought to be a tremendous facilitator of this movement. Baran (2009: 314).

Social media has an impact on how a television news station distributes information to its viewers, as well as how that information is received. Within the next decade or so, social media will have made significant advances in the way stations present their information and how that information is received by various stakeholder groups, making it virtually different from how information is presented and received today, as social media is increasingly relied on by businesses and all aspects of daily life.

Since 2008, social media has begun to transform the way individuals communicate with one another, resulting in an increasingly open environment on the internet. Naturally, this new phenomena will change how news and information are delivered and consumed, as well as the impact on all stakeholders and social platforms.

Because of the open nature of social media and the three-screen strategy, many stakeholders now receive news 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Stakeholders now have constant access to information thanks to the three-screen strategy

which ultimately transforms how television station managers provide information to their audiences, as timed newscasts are no longer required. All news is now delivered in real time via social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

Because of the far-reaching and quick-acting features of social media, news writers can notify their audience within minutes of an event occurring. (Changing News, 2012; Bruell, 2012)
