ELECTRONIC RESOURCES AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE ACADEMIC LIBRARY: LIBRARY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Huge changes in communication technologies shaped the twentieth century. The emergence and use of information technology is the most significant development affecting scholarly communication in the twentieth century. The use of computers for information processing has resulted in the introduction of a slew of new products and services. As a result, the academic community has undergone tremendous changes in recent years, taking on new dimensions as a result of technology-driven applications.

Libraries have undergone significant transformations in recent years, both in terms of collection development and service structures. As a result, libraries are utilizing technology to improve the management of scholarly information in order to strengthen and accelerate access to scholarly information that is not held locally. Over the last few years, there has been a significant shift in collection development policies and practices.

The print medium is increasingly giving way to materials in electronic form (Sharma, 2009). According to Ani (2008), quoting Tsakonas and Papatheodorou (2006), “the transition from print to electronic medium has provided users with new tools and applications for information seeking and retrieval, in addition to resulting in an increase in electronic information.” Electronic resources are invaluable research tools that supplement traditional library print resources.

Dadzie (2007) writes about the benefits of electronic resources, stating that they are invaluable research tools that supplement print-based resources in a traditional library setting. According to her, their benefits include: access to information that may be restricted to the user due to geographical location or finances, access to more current information, and the provision of extensive links to additional resources related contents.

As a result of the rapid emergence and development of electronic information technologies, it is now possible to envision radically different ways of organizing the collections and services traditionally provided by libraries. While libraries are approaching a financial crisis in terms of collection development,

these new technologies have the potential to reduce costs while also revolutionizing information access. According to Navjyoyi (2007), the key advantages that attract research scholars are rapid publication and desktop availability.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Libraries are nests that thatch scholarship, but libraries are not inherently valuable to users. Users must be motivated to recognize the true value of a library. There are numerous resources available both in print and electronically; however, the main purpose of these resources will be fulfilled only if users can effectively locate these information sources.

As a result, the library’s true worth will be determined. In this era of technological advancement, the forms of resources have been markedly transformed from printed books and journals to various electronic forms. Today’s library faces a challenge in expanding its resources and developing its collection in both print and electronic formats. Students of this generation are more likely to prefer digital forms of information because they prefer to obtain information as quickly as possible.

1.3 The Study’s Purpose

The study’s other objectives were to:

Examine the reliance of lecturers/students and researchers on e-resources.

Determine how students perceive the impact of electronic resources on their academic performance.

Examine the advantages of e-resources over traditional sources of information.

Examine the purpose and frequency with which you use the library’s electronic resources and services.

Investigate the impact of electronic resources and services on teachers’ and researchers’ academic work.

1.4 Research Issues

How reliant are lecturers/students and researchers on e-resources?

What is their perception of the impact of electronic resources on their academic performance?

What are the advantages of electronic resources over traditional sources of information?

What is the purpose and frequency with which you use the library’s electronic resources and services?

What effect do electronic resources and services have on the academic work of teachers and researchers?

1.5 Importance of the study:

The study’s significance is to gain an understanding of the role of a library in a student’s life. This research will aid in determining the types of resources that students prefer and are comfortable using. Also, try to learn about the various aspects of users, such as what motivates or discourages them from visiting the library.

It will also serve as a useful indicator of how important proper library education is, as it teaches students information retrieval skills. It is also hoped that the study will serve as a guideline for librarians, faculty, and authorities to learn about the information needs of users and provide concrete directions for future collection development.

1.6 Glossary/Term Definitions:

The Academic Library: An academic library is one that is located in a school, college, university, or other institution of higher learning. It is a library that is an integral part of a higher education institution. 13

Compact Disc (CD-ROM): Read-Only Memory (ROM). A compact disc format for storing text, graphics, and hi-fi stereo sound. The disc is nearly identical to the music CD, but the data is stored on different tracks. Although the music CD player cannot play CD ROM discs, most CD-ROM players can. a type of storage medium widely used in modern computers A single CD-ROM can store 600 MB of data14…

Journal of Electronic Publishing:– E-journals are publications that are only available in electronic form and have an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). An e-journal, according to their definition, contains original work that is subjected to peer review and is only available for free on the Internet. 15

Electronic Library: A library that is considered to be one in which the core processes of the library are primarily electronic in nature.

This is likely to occur as a result of the widespread incorporation and use of computers and the various facilities that they can provide, such as online indexes, full-text searching and retrieval facilities, automated record keeping, and computer-based decision making.

Furthermore, within an electronic library system, there will be a conscious shift toward more widespread use of electronic media (both digital and analog) for information storage, retrieval, and delivery. This will imply that such libraries will be involved in an active and extensive computerization program. 16

Information is a property of data that results from or is produced by a process that produces data.
