ABSTRACT

The goal of this research is to conduct a survey of employment opportunities for Imo State graduates in office technology and management. A random sample of two public and private establishments was selected for the survey. The study questions were four in number, with a sample size of 70 responses. The researcher has a five-point lighter scale. The research revealed that many modern business organisations are rapidly becoming automated, and many job opportunities for graduate Secretary/Office Managers require efficiency and competence in the use of these automated machines. Furthermore, the Office Technology and Management Programme is inadequately implemented in the need of the Secretarial Profession, resulting in many graduates of Office Technology and Management being unemployed despite the fact that there are numerous job prospects for Office Managers. Based on the findings, it was advised that focus be placed on the acquisition of skills in modern office machines, and that funds be allocated to ensure adequate availability of these facilities. Finally, the programme should be mentioned to ensure that it is carried out exactly as prescribed.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background for the Study

In modern times, there has been an increasing need for specialised courses aimed at promoting organisational growth, with a focus on the study of secretarial studies. An adequate study of this course will assist confidential secretaries in the policy formulation, organisation, and direction of the programmed and objectives of any given establishment towards the realisation of goals.

Secretaries’ jobs arose from the growing need for top-level executives to have assistants who could relieve them of much of the burden of office technology and administrative details. In other terms, secretaries are the administrative office managers of organisations.

According to Anyanwu (1985), the secretary was not born with the profession, but rather evolved as a result of the necessity to improve communication, manage office equipment, and enhance the linage of the firms.

Fundamentally, the secretarial profession denotes and entails the performance of the secretary’s tasks and functions, which have been instilled in the individual through intense and possibly elaborate education and training.

The secretary is an image maker for the organisation, and no firm can afford to lose its image, hence the secretary’s role in the office cannot be overstated in her interactions with her executive, coworkers, and the outside world.

As a result, as a foundation for expanding the procession’s ideals, it will be necessary to explain at this point that, according to the International Secretaries Association (1985), a secretary is defined as: an assistant to the executive who possesses mastery of the organisation and the ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, as well as to display initiative, exercise judgements, and make decisions within the scope of her authority.

Looking at the Nigerian economy as a whole, one should be able to tell how well or not Graduates of Office Technology and Management are doing.

Regardless, the program has been operated with no care for what happens to the program’s graduates (office technology and management students) after they leave the institution.

The question is if there are enough jobs to absorb the output of this program. In summary, what are the employment chances for graduates of the Office Technology and Management (OTM) program?

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In today’s Nigerian economy, there are various elements that lower the likelihood of employment, which are known as the Nigeria factors. These factors include favouritism and gratification prior to performance. T

he economy will undoubtedly suffer if the wrong workers are assigned to any position for which they are not expected to perform. In light of this, there is a need for this research to examine the viability of hiring office technology and management graduates in the economy.

1.3 Purpose Of The Study

The primary goal of this research is to determine the employment opportunities for graduates of office technology and management. Specifically, the study will seek to: a. Evaluate office equipment for educating Office Technology and Management graduates for employment.

a. Evaluate the sort of training provided to Office Technology and Management. c. Find out the abilities expected of an Office Technology and Management (O.T.M) job seeker. d. The impact of office equipment skill on the (O.T.M).

1.4 Research Questions.

The following research questions were posed to guide the study:

i. What office equipment is required for O.T.M training, and why?

ii. What kind of training is provided to Office Technology and Management?

iv. How significant are office technology and management graduates?

1.5 The scope of the study.

This research will focus on general data to demonstrate the level of career options for graduates of office technology and management in both the public and private sectors of the economy.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

This research has so far been hampered by the following factors:

i. Inadequate time for conducting research.

ii. Insufficient time for assistance and counselling during study development.

iii. Inadequate funding for study materials.

iv. Relevant attitudes and research for this work.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study will generate statistics on the career opportunities for graduates in Office Technology and Management, as well as why a secretary/office manager should have the requisite office machine skills to work well in public and private organisations.

The significance of this study also stems from its aim to teach secretaries/office managers the technical skills and factors expected of them for work.

The relevance clearly indicates that it will be of considerable benefit to organisations in both the commercial and public sectors, as well as government establishments, who may use it as a reference resource in directing their actions.

The research’s objective assessment of the views and employment chances for graduates in office technology and management (O.T.M) will present intriguing challenges and solutions to this study, as well as serve as a material guide at the National Diploma level.
