ENTREPRENEURIAL EDUCATION AND SELF RELIANCE

CHAPITRE ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Entrepreneurial education efforts for youth empowerment in Nigeria have grown over time. Gone are the days when a graduate could easily fit into any available employment vacancy during the oil boom of the 1970s.

All of this changed in the mid-1980s, when there was a worldwide crisis and a substantial depression in Nigeria’s economy. This led in global unemployment, particularly in emerging nations such as Nigeria.

The high proportion of unemployment resulted in societal vices such as armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom. More recently, the global economic catastrophe has caused young and graduate unemployment to skyrocket. In this regard, various governmental and non-governmental organisations have initiated policies to address the problem of unemployment among Nigerian citizens.

Through support agencies such as the National Directorate for Employment (NDE), the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), the Small Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN), the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), the Raw Materials and Development Council (RMRDC), and others (Olayin).

The goal of these programmes, agencies, and councils was to develop self-employment and small enterprise initiatives in the belief that this would unlock people’s economic potentials, increase the capacity to empower and equip individuals in society to participate and benefit from their national economy.

And facilitate economic development, which forms the foundation for transformation (Ekpo and Edet 2011 in Babatunde and Babatunde 2014). To be sure, in keeping with the theme of the National Productivity Day on February 21, 1991, “Productivity for Self-Reliance and Excellence,” the Nigerian government implemented entrepreneurship education in schools as a means of encouraging students’ self-sufficiency, self-sustainability, and self-support culture.

The goal is to encourage graduates to use their personal resources to become self-employed. This is due to the fact that entrepreneurship is concerned with the persistent pursuit of opportunities to create wealth through the innovative creation of a product or service that meets the needs of customers.

Using score resources in a way that results in a growth enterprise that meets the expectations of stakeholders whose roles sustain the business. Entrepreneurship education prepares students with information, skills, attitudes, and motivation for entrepreneurial success in any situation.

It teaches people how to look for financial opportunities (Azonuche and Umeri, 2012). In this regard, the study intends to investigate entrepreneurial education and self-reliance among youth in Akwa Ibom state.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study on entrepreneurial education and self-reliance among youth in Akwa Ibom state was prompted by the state’s high crime rate and unemployment. The prevalence of unemployment in Nigeria has had a substantial impact on the socioeconomic well-being of the youth (Okon, 2004).

The majority of study has been done on entrepreneurial education, but relatively few on entrepreneurial education and self-reliance in Nigeria.

Previous research have struggled to establish the causes of low self-esteem among Nigerian youngsters; the effect is especially visible among Nigerian graduates.

1.3 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The primary goal of the study is to investigate entrepreneurial education and self-reliance among youths in Akwa Ibom State. Other specific study objectives include:

1. to investigate the link between entrepreneurial education and self-reliance

2. to ascertain the impact of entrepreneurship education on the well-being of Akwa Ibom State youths

3. to ascertain the contribution of entrepreneurial education on skill acquisition and unemployment reduction among Akwa Ibom State youths.

4. to conduct research on the factors influencing self-reliance and the implementation of entrepreneurial education in Akwa Ibom State.

5. to propose a remedy to the aforementioned problem

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study developed research questions in order to determine the aforementioned aims. The following are the research questions for the study:

1. What is the connection between entrepreneurial education and self-sufficiency?

2. What is the impact of entrepreneurship education on the well-being of Akwa Ibom State youths?

3. What role does entrepreneurship education play in the development of skills and the reduction of youth unemployment in Akwa Ibom State?

4. What variables influence self-reliance and the implementation of entrepreneurial education in Akwa Ibom State?

1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: Entrepreneurial education has little effect on youth self-reliance in Akwa Ibom State.

H1: Entrepreneurial education impacts self-reliance among Akwa Ibom State youths.

1.6 THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study emphasises the critical need for entrepreneurial education and self-reliance in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole, focusing more on the educational system, techniques, and their eventual social development effect in society.

The study emphasises the problems of the country’s level of education and its equivalence to the level of poverty in the society due to a lack of employment or knowledge of how to start businesses; the resultant effect is a society that breeds healthy partnership and motivation, influencing the nation’s development.

However, the contribution of this research work to knowledge identifies what is important to the youths and the Nigerian economy, which is qualitative entrepreneurial education focused on the needs of the youths, particularly during this period of unemployment.

Rather than the United Nations resolution to increase budgetary details, increasing the number of people who go to school. This is not a study on entrepreneurial education and self-reliance; however, it contributes to the body of literature on the subject and brings to light the findings in order to determine which strategy would eventually work for Akwa Ibom State youths in truly eradicating unemployment in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY

The study investigates the function of entrepreneurial education and self-reliance among Akwa Ibom State youths, as well as its significance in stimulating entrepreneurship skills in future graduates in order to minimise unemployment in Nigeria.

The study looked at undergraduates from the current university teaching system (University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State), from the third to the final year, assuming they were admitted in the last three (3) years. The study finds undergraduate entrepreneurship abilities to be important because of their immediate impact on Nigeria’s future.
