ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND OIL SPILLAGES: AN INDICTMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Since the dawn of civilisation, man has been driven by the desire to advance and improve the lives of his fellow humans by researching the natural world. It is undeniable that the natural environment, prior to the advent of environmental degradation

provided limitless opportunities for development and economic sufficiency for the inhabitants or the populace; however, with the advent of environmental degradation, the inhabitants were denied these opportunities and forced to live in abject poverty.

Recognising the dangers posed by environmental degradation, the international community and the Nigerian government have enacted a variety of laws to combat it, with the goal of producing encouraging results by improving environmental sustainability.

The obstinate attitude of individuals involved in environmental degradation has continued to weaken environmental regulations, with the government and its agencies implicitly participating in the act of breaking environmental rules.

Unfortunately, the present legislative mechanisms have done little or nothing to address the threat of environmental degradation.
