EXPOSING THE AFRICAN CULTURAL HERITAGE. A CASE STUDY OF ZULU SUFOLA’S KING EMENE.

This paper examines two of Zulu Sofola’s works in order to determine the level of influence she wields on the Nigerian stage and in the growing body of Nigerian feminist writings.

As a pioneer female writer in Nigeria, the paper focuses on the major influences that shaped her works in order to gain a better understanding and appreciation of her role as the country’s first female playwright and scholar.

Introduction.

Nwazuluoha Onuekwueke Sofola, born one year after Wole Soyinka on June 20, 1935, belongs to the second generation of Nigerian playwrights to emerge to prominence following the Nigerian civil war. Meki Nzewi, Bode Sowande, Kola Omotosho, Ahmed Yerima, Femi Osofisan, and Fela Davis are among them.

Femi Osofisan, by far the most popular of this group, is quickly gaining the title of Nigeria’s most prolific writer and dramatist. Since their inception, this group of writers has had a significant impact on the artistic traditions of their predecessors. They all lived and worked in the academic community at one point or another.

Zulu Sofola, as she is affectionately known, has played an important role in the development of modern drama and theatre in Nigeria. As a pioneer female Nigerian dramatist and traditional feminist writer, Obafemi observes that in Sofola’s plays, we encounter a simple and even simplistic plot geared towards a thesis or advocating submissions to the whims and caprices of age-old demigods and custodians of bogus traditions, for those who kick, there is no restitution.
