FACTORS AFFECTING NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY STUDY CENTER STUDY HABIT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Habit is a person’s second nature; it is what he or she does in every situation. It is unchangeable; it can be good or bad. It is unaffected by changes in location or schedule. A habit is something that is done on a regular, scheduled basis and is not relegated to a secondary or optional role in one’s life. It is simply done, no reservations, no excuses, and no expectations.
A study habit is the purchase of a dedicated, scheduled, and uninterrupted time to devote to the task of learning. Without it, one stagnates and becomes self-limiting in life (Gonzalez, 1997). Study habits reveal how much a person intends to learn, how far he wishes to progress, and how much he wishes to earn. All of this can be determined by one’s study habits throughout one’s life.
The significance of study habits in a student’s life is that they play a significant role in their academic achievement, because no one can be successful without studies. Students should use various techniques for studying because these techniques can ensure good results. Everyone is aware that each student has unique study habits. Some students can study in a crowded place, but others prefer a quiet environment.
Although it is preferable to study in a peaceful environment, this is not always possible for students. In this manner, students should be required to adjust to their surroundings, such as in noisy classrooms or hostels, where some students study in silence while others do not.
They can easily adjust if they have good study habits. Some students are unable to cope with the inappropriate environment. As a result, some students lose their positions. Students with good study habits achieve better results (Sadia, 2005). The study, on the other hand, seeks to identify the factors influencing the study habits and academic performance of undergraduate students at the National Open University study center.
Academic performance is something that students achieve in class, a laboratory, a library, or field work at school, college, or university. A notable academic performance is graduating first in one’s class, which is sometimes purely quantitative, while having the findings of extensive research published in a recognized journal is also a notable academic performance (Ansari 1983).
When students are admitted to a university, they have no idea what their studies will entail. Most of them have old patterns of seeking knowledge; initially, they use the same old techniques, but after a while, they realize that the old techniques are no longer effective. They gradually began to develop a mature study style. When some students enter a higher education institution, they feel liberated from all of the academic concerns that have a negative impact on their studies.
They also fail their tests or exams, and there are other poor study habits that affect students’ performance. This includes a very common mistake made by students, which is also unavoidable on their part. When students first arrive, especially at universities, they believe they are free of all academic obligations.
When students leave their classes without making any plans to review what they have learned, their study habits suffer as a result. They become accustomed to it and lose their positions. If they want to succeed in life, they must be active in their studies and attend all lectures given in class by the teacher.
Study habits are learning habits that allow students to work independently. The term study habit refers to a student’s method of studying, whether systematic, efficient, or inefficient. According to this definition, good study habits result in positive academic performance, whereas ineffective study habits result in academic failure. Reports, examination, assessment, and rating are used to directly measure study habits.
Students’ attitudes and study habits toward any subject have been described as a function of their beliefs about the subject and their implicit evaluative responses to those beliefs, all of which have a direct relationship with student academic performance.
1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT
There are numerous factors in Nigeria that influence students’ ability to cultivate effective and efficient study habits in order to improve their academic performance. University students’ academic performance can be influenced by factors such as their health, motivation, anxiety, their environment, and the adequacy of infrastructures such as textbooks and well-equipped libraries.
Nuthana and Yenagi (2009) investigated the factors that contribute to poor academic performance among university undergraduates. Intellectual ability, poor study habits, achievement motivation, lack of vocational goals, low self concept, low socioeconomic status of the family, poor family structure, and so on are some of the factors identified. However, the researcher is looking into the factors that influence undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance.
1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES
The following are the study’s objectives:
1. To investigate the factors influencing undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance.
2. To investigate the factors influencing undergraduate students’ academic performance.
3. To ascertain the relationship between undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance.
1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
1. What factors influence undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance?
2. What factors influence undergraduate students’ academic performance?
3. What is the relationship between undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance?
1.5 HYPOTHESIS
HO: There is no significant relationship between undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance.
HA: There is a significant relationship between undergraduate students’ study habits and academic performance.
1.6 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE
For the Research Project, the following are the study’s implications:
1. The study’s findings will educate stakeholders in the education sector and the general public about the factors that can influence students’ academic performance, with a special focus on study habits and factors that can reshape students’ study habits to improve academic performance.
2. This research will also serve as a resource base for other scholars and researchers interested in conducting additional research in this field in the future, and if applied will go so far as to provide new explanations for the topic.
1.7 STUDY SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
This study on the factors influencing study habit and academic performance of undergraduate students will cover various types of study habits practiced by undergraduate students and their impact on academic performance while taking into account factors that can encourage better study habits.
STUDY LIMITATIONS
Financial constraint- Inadequate funding tends to impede the researcher’s efficiency in locating relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in the data collection process (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint- The researcher will conduct this study alongside other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.
