CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Because of its importance in everyday life, social studies is now taught in primary and secondary schools. According to Adeyoyin (1982), social studies is the study of man and his totality (the study includes where he lives, his past and present activities, his culture, frame of mind, and how he interacts with others in society).

Wronki (1981) defines social studies as “common learning of man’s interaction with his social and physical environment, a way of life of how man influences his environment and, in turn, how environment influences man.”

THE VALUE OF SOCIAL STUDIES

Social studies teach culture, so students can understand their social norms, culture, beliefs, and rules.

It enables people to comprehend the historical and contemporary relationship between humans and their social and physical environments.

Social studies assist individuals in developing the ability to learn and acquire basic skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, calculating, observing, analyzing, and inference, all of which are necessary for the formation of sound social, economic, and political judgment.

Social studies teach students about the environment, including its man-made, natural, cultural, and spiritual resources, as well as how to conserve these resources for future development.

Social studies is taught in primary and secondary schools to help students understand what they should do as members of society. Some students in secondary schools are not ready to learn because of various circumstances; others believe that social studies is difficult; as a result, there is a lack of interest in the subject, which leads to negative attitudes toward social studies learning.
