CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Gesidle S. A. (1987) defined home economics as a sequence of occupations, jobs, and positions held by an individual over the course of his or her working life. By pursuing a career in home economics, one is essentially attempting to acquire knowledge of occupational opportunities available in their social environment.
This involves a decision that goes beyond the individual’s bibliography. But if the individual acquires the fundamental skills that will enable them to adapt to social and economic change in their daily lives, they will be able to reach their desired objective.
Home economics is a relatively new field of study, and it is still experiencing difficulties in establishing itself. Its major problem is employment opportunities and the rapidly changing role of the family in education in Nigeria. An investigation was conducted on the effectiveness of the system of vocational training, and it was recommended that boys and girls be given equal opportunity to study home economics, and the need was emphasized to increase and extend home economics as a career to all schools and levels.
In the minds of many, pursuing a career in home economics is a matter of integrating academic discipline with real-world circumstances through the use of the subject area. According to Jaiye Via (1979), our youth require constant guidance in their career and subject choices. It is common knowledge that students choose subjects or careers based on aptitude rather than genuine interest.
Such students must accept the possibility of failure and, of course, disappointment. Makinde (1978) observed that in a simple society with little diversity, the choice of a career did not require a great deal of specialized assistance; parents and friends could provide adequate guidance to a person who must choose a career from several familiar options.
In traditional societies, children were taught by their parents; however, with the advent of formal education, the situation has changed, and most parents have a limited understanding of the prevailing conditions in schools, as well as the variety of available care options.
Academics and vocational training have made 3rd choice more difficult; therefore, greater care must be taken to avoid frustration, which may vary depending on the choice.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS
Home economics is a course that covers so many aspects of life, including sewing, home management, and more.
Despite the interest students have in home economics as a major, enrollment in the major is low.
PURPOSE OF STUDY
This research aims to accomplish the following objectives. Whether students are knowledgeable about the jobs available on the labor market prior to choosing a job, and whether students will accept any job as long as they pass their examination.
Determine the factors that influence home economics as a profession in the Oredo Local Government Area.
Whether students take into consideration factors affecting their choice of career.
Providing students with suggestions for sources of information about potential careers.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
This study’s significance is:
Highlight the student’s occupational aspirations and the factors that influence their career choice.
Highlight the factors that influence secondary school teachers’ decision to pursue home economics as a career in universities and colleges of education, and provide a perspective on the importance of the subject that will encourage them to choose the correct career.
3. Raise awareness of the general understanding of the process of adolescent occupational selection and shed light on the amount of knowledge Nigerian adolescents have about available jobs in Nigeria.
Bring to light the department of curriculum and planning’s provision of meaningful educational programs, so that students entering advanced training have a clearer idea of what they wish to do.
RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
Based on these research questions, the study tested the following null hypotheses:
There is no significant correlation between the subjects studied in school and the career goals of students.
Finance has no bearing on the decision to pursue home economics as a career.
There is no significant difference between the job aspirations of students and the employment opportunities on the labor market.
There is no correlation between a teacher’s credentials and the teaching of home economics in secondary schools.
BASIC ASSUMPTIONS
The following are the presumptions upon which this study is based:
a. The knowledge of the students will aid in the development of social, personal, vocational, and occupational awareness.
b. To meet the needs of youth and assist them in reaching their full potential.
c. To ensure that students have a more positive school adjustment and meaningful learning experience.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
For clarity’s sake, the following terms used in this study are defined below.
This indicates that the student has chosen a profession (work) or subject after rejecting others that hold certain appeal.
OCCUPATION ASPIRATION refers to the occupation a person would choose if there were no constraints. In this occupation, career and occupation are used interchangeably.
HOME ECONOMICS: Therefore, Olaitan agrees with Agusioboines’ definition of home economics as the study of everything pertaining to the home and family.
