FACTORS INFLUENCING FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study aims to evaluate the factors influencing female engagement in sports among undergraduate students at the University of Benin. The need for this study arises from the fact that, despite the health benefits of sports involvement, female participation remains extremely low.

During this investigation, five research questions were developed and tested. Respondents received 100 copies of questionnaires. The data collected from the research results was analysed using simple percentages. The following are some of the study’s findings:

Females are primarily unable to participate in sports due to physiological and anatomical limitations.

Sports provide health benefits.

Female undergraduate students are equally interested in sports as boys.

Undergraduate students conduct two sorts of sports activities: active and passive.

Based on the study’s findings, recommendations were made. It is intended that sporting activities would be adopted by all female undergraduate students in the future.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study.

Female engagement in sports has increased significantly. There have been and continue to be efforts to increase the number of female athletes. However, significant more efforts are required to increase female involvement in sports (Linus, 2003).

According to Jackson and Harris (1999), women were not allowed to witness or participate in the ancient Olympic games. By the end of the nineteenth century, English women from the middle classes began participating in sports.

Victorian attitudes required women to play in bulky clothes that made mobility impossible (Jackson et al, 1999). In the early twentieth century, national regulating bodies for several sports were established, and women’s tournaments were organised separately from men’s.

Women participated in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1904, although only in archery (Jackson et al, 1999). According to Jackson et al. (1999), the First World War was a watershed moment for women’s sports, as it dispelled the misconception that women were unable to compete in men’s sports.
