FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST EFFECTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION
INTRODUCTION
The modern definition of the environment includes not just water, air, and soil, but also the social and economic conditions in which we live (Park, 2011). The key to man’s health is primarily dependent on his environment.
In fact, much of man’s ill-health may be traced back to adverse environmental elements such as water, soil, and air pollution, poor housing conditions, the presence of animal reservoirs, and insects that operate as disease vectors, all of which represent major hazards to human health.
Urbanisation, industrialisation, and other human activities frequently contribute to environmental contamination. The National Sanitation Foundation of the United States defines sanitation as “a way of life expressed in the clean lines of homes, farms, businesses, premises, neighbourhoods, and community parks” (2011).
Furthermore, the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines sanitation as providing facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine, faeces, and other waste products (UNICEF and WHO 2012).
