ABSTRACT
This study focused on the characteristics that motivate women to participate in adult literacy programs in the Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State. Six research questions and two null hypotheses were proposed to ensure the study’s effectiveness. Some of these include:

1. What economic incentives motivate women to participate in the adult literacy programs in Oji-River Local Government Area?

2. What educational characteristics motivate women to participate in the adult literacy programs in Oji-River Local Government Area? Furthermore, this study reviewed certain literature relevant to the research effort. The study’s population consists of 816 registered female adult education students from Enugu State’s Oji-River Local Government Area.

The primary data gathering instrument was a 36-item FMWPALPQ Questionnaire. Among the major findings are: 1. that the greatest education factors motivating women’s participation in adult literacy programme are obtaining a certificate for a better job, becoming literate, and improvement on communicative skills;

2. that the greatest psychological factors motivating women’s participation in adult literacy programme are being respected in the family and society, boosting of ego in the society, occupying higher positions of authority in the society, and an Based on the study’s findings, recommendations were made. Some of them are:

1. The Enugu State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, in collaboration with the Commission for Women Affairs, should launch a realistic and comprehensive campaign for women’s education, emphasising that age is not a barrier to learning.

2. that adult education administrators, supervisors, co-ordinators, and anyone involved in the delivery of adult education programmes shall ensure that the time and location of the adult education programmes are suitable and welcoming to female adult learners. Finally, suggestions for future research were presented.
