CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background of the Study
One entrusted with the secrets or confidence despondency and oversee router and detail work for superior is the definition of “secretary” according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
Secretaries are also tasked with taking dictation from supervisors, answering phones, gathering information, and documenting it using various administrative tools such as menual typewriters, computers, telex machines, and electric duplicating machines.
As the hub of an organisation, an office relies on competent management to accomplish its objectives. The output of secretaries and their career stability are both impacted by specific conditions that secretaries face on the job.
Factors pertaining to technology, language structure, sociology, the environment, and the economy are all part of the picture. The demands of the modern workplace have increased the need of teaching secretaries how to use various pieces of office technology.
Because of the high need for people with strong command of the English language, the impact of the language structure on the hiring process for secretaries at the Institute of Management and Technology cannot be overstated.
1.2 The Statement Of The Problem
As a career path, secretarial work is enlightening, therefore to suggest that it is unimportant is demeaning and understated. Through which every organisation sees. Onabanya (1990) states that a secretary is a trained and specialised employee of an organisation or department whose job it is to handle mail, business problems, and people.
Because of the many services they are expected to provide, secretaries in today’s modern world encounter numerous problems in the workplace. Institutes of Management and Technology in Enugu and other universities in the capital region require secretaries to possess certain equipment. People who are curious about this line of work tend to look down on those who work in it.
The majority of employers treat their employees poorly, showing little attention for their career rather than the proper level of recognition and respect that they deserve. The word “secretary” is often twisted around by the general public.
The group holds the view that everyone who writes for a living views it as nothing more than a woman’s profession and nothing more. The secretary resigns from her position in the government as her reputation and self-esteem take a nosedive.
1.3.3 The Purpose Of The Study
The researchers in this study set out to identify the elements that have an impact on secretarial careers in the capital territory of Enugu. Additionally, it would investigate the reasons behind the public’s misunderstanding and disrespect of secretaries and their work, as well as potential remedies to these issues.
1.4 The significance Of The Study
The reasons behind secretaries’ discontent in the workplace can be better understood with the aid of this research. As far as people’s misconceptions and misunderstandings of secretarial careers go, it will also show prospective secretaries what they can anticipate from the field.
1.5 The Scope of the Study
The goal of this study is to identify the variables that have an impact on secretarial careers in a few chosen companies located in the Enugu capital territory.
The research was conducted while school was still in session, which meant that there was a time limitation. Because I was juggling research with my regular academic responsibilities, I didn’t have much time to go to different locations to get more information. The scope of this endeavour had to be constrained to accommodate the information I could gather in the time I had.
Another issue that hindered the efficacy of this research was funding. There wasn’t enough funding for me to be able to standardise my work as a student researcher.
Some textbooks are available outside of Enugu because to financial constraints and organisational issues. Lacking the means to travel there on my own, I was unable to pay them a visit. Essentially, this task was delegated to a small number of organisations.
1.6 Hypotheses
This study was guided by the following hypotheses, which took into account the nature and scope of the research.
1. A secretary’s career in Enugu is impacted by the unfavourable climate.
Second, secretaries often struggle with language.
Third, secretaries are officially considered to be part of the executive team.
4. Lectures that do not adequately instruct secretaries have an impact on their professional development.
