Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The modern attendance system in colleges has failed to meet its primary goal, which was to ensure that the correct statistics of students who attended class could be obtained. Among its flaws, the possibility for a student to sign in for another student is the most serious.

Many educational institutions are attempting to establish precise, safe, and dependable methods for protecting access rights to their current services or operations. Fingerprint-based attendance systems provide an answer to these concerns.

Biometrics, particularly in information technology, refers to methods for analysing physical and behavioural identities and extracting unique attributes for identification or monitoring.

This technology can detect a variety of physical features, including faces, eyes, fingers, hands, veins, ears, and teeth, and characteristics such as gaits or voice patterns are still being studied and analysed as part of the larger biometrics area.

Biometrics provides safe methods of access to sensitive services, eliminating the need to carry a token, card, or memorise several passwords. Biometric techniques also reduce the risk of lost, forgotten, or copied passwords, stolen tokens, or over the shoulder attacks, but despite all of these obvious advantages

there is still one major reason why it has not been implemented in many organisations, which is that the biometric technique is expensive and the level of standardisation differs within systems, numerous health hazards, the requirement for specialised analytical software, and the availability of machines with the c Fingerprint identification is one of the most well-known and widely used biometric identification systems.

Because of their uniqueness and constancy over time, fingerprints have been used for identification for many years, but have lately been automated due to advances in computing power.

The fingerprint system appears to be the most cost-effective and user-friendly of all biometric systems, with no negative health consequences. [25].

Fingerprint authentication has been proven across multiple apps. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is believed to have kept over 250 million civil fingerprint data for criminal investigation and identification of unknown victims as early as 1924.

It is currently widely utilised as a secure and effective authentication method in a variety of fields, including finance, medicine, e-commerce, and consumer applications [l].

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

A survey and review of current attendance methods revealed that the majority of professors at Nnamdi Azikiwe University use a paper-based attendance system to track attendance.

Problems observed with the paper-based registrations are:

Paper-based registers are not uploaded to a centralised system, resulting in data loss for analysis.

The amount of time spent collecting data affects how much time is spent lecturing.

Students’ buddy-signing can deceive the system, allowing their pals to exceed the 75% attendance threshold.

As a result, this research suggests fingerprint recognition as a solution to these difficulties at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

1.3 Aim and Objective

The goal of creating and implementing a biometric system is to provide a handheld device as well as an application that includes a database where fingerprint data can be stored.

The precise aims include:

To build and install a student attendance system employing fingerprint technology.

The initial task is to create the Student Attendance System. This system will integrate with fingerprint technology. This system will track the pupils’ attendance in class. This technology will also provide educators with easy access to student information.

To be able to back up and properly query the regular attendance in the database.

To be able to print out those who met the 75% attendance standard

To compare the efficiency of the proposed system and the manual system.

This technique allows lecturers to simply record their students’ attendance in class. They are also not required to calculate the percentage of each student at the end of the semester.

As a user, pupils can encourage themselves to be more disciplined and punctual.
