FLOOD HAZARD MAPPING AND RISK MANAGEMENT IN PARTS OF LAGOS STATE

Flood hazard mapping: The occurrence of floods in Nigeria, which has been related to climate change and poor urban planning, is a key issue for national development. Flooding in Nigeria harmed about 11 million people between 1985 and 2014, resulting in 1100 deaths and property damage of more than US$17 billion.

Although more frequent floods have been documented in Niger, Adamawa, Oyo, Kano, and Jigawa states, probably due to the effect of the rivers Niger, Benue, Ogun, and Hadeja, Lagos appears to have experienced the majority of the country’s floods.

With the country’s rapid population increase and urbanisation, the risk of floods to human life and property has become critical.Critically, low awareness of the hazard is a major impediment to its management.

This presents a substantial knowledge gap regarding how to improve on current efforts to solve flooding concerns in Nigeria. Since attempts to address the danger appear to be restricted, the current study is motivated by the necessity to uncover those limits in Nigeria’s flood control efforts.

Possible next steps are offered based on a critical examination of flooding and its management in Nigeria, as well as globally recognised ‘best practices’ in flood risk reduction and lessons learnt from other countries’ flooding experiences.
