Gender Inequality And The Status Of Widows In Nigeria: Implications For Counselling
Abstract
This study explored the counseling needs of widows in Rivers State and the implications for further research. A sample of 2,000 widows from the state was selected using purposive sampling.
Data was gathered using a self-designed questionnaire, the Widows’ Needs Assessment Questionnaire (WNAQ), which was validated with a reliability coefficient of 0.84 and 0.66, respectively.
The WNAQ aimed to gather information on the counseling needs of widows based on factors such as age, family size, number of children, and socio-economic background.
Each item on the questionnaire was rated on a 4-point Likert scale, with response options ranging from “strongly needed” to “needed.” Participants were asked to indicate the extent to which they felt widows required guidance.
Two hypotheses were formulated and tested using T-test statistics. The findings revealed that widows, regardless of age or family size, expressed a need for counseling services.
There was no significant difference in the counseling needs between younger and older widows, nor between widows with large versus small families.
Based on these results, it was recommended that government programs should include a gender component to assess widows’ access to economic and social rights. Additionally, prioritizing widows and implementing empowerment programs are essential for their rehabilitation.
