Chapter One: Introduction
Background of the study
Prior to the emergence of contemporary modes of communication, man had devised an adequate communication technique for his own growth. Through this approach, people in various rural settings were mobilised to engage in the affairs of their community.
However, as society grew in size and complexity, conventional communication means were unable to fully meet people’s communication demands, therefore modern media were established to reach out to a relatively wide heterogeneous and anonymous audience. At the same time, the mass media era began. It is worth noting that communication is a crucial social tool.
Without communication, one could not have affected the thoughts, feelings, or actions of others. Man conveys his feelings to others through written, spoken, and nonverbal signs and symbols.
It is also true that communication connects the individual to himself, his surroundings, and other men. According to the Advanced Learners Dictionary (7th edition, pages 291), communication, defined as the process of exchanging thoughts, ideas, facts, sentiments, and so on from one person to another, is critical to human survival.
Without it, life has no meaning, and human interaction is impossible. Communication is essential and should not be underestimated.
According to Sybil (1989), as referenced by Yushau (2011), communication acts as a tool for social interaction. It allows us to better comprehend ourselves, stay in touch with others, and understand situations. It is the means by which power is obtained, exerted, and maintained.
It is the means by which relationships are formed, extended, and maintained. The mass media has served to raise social consciousness while also providing individuals with a convenient way of life.
The print media was essential in historical events such as the Renaissance, the American War of Independence, the French Revolution, and many more.
The newspaper was first developed around 1600 A.D., but it took more than a century for this kind of mass media to directly influence the people. The first printed newspaper was The Relation. Later, in 1690, Benjamin Harris published the first colonial newspaper in Boston. In the nineteenth century, newspaper circulation increased significantly.
The first African-American newspaper, Freedom’s Journal, was established in 1827 (Wikipedia, 2016). Gutenberg’s development of the printing press in the fourteenth century must have contributed to the printing industry’s revolution.
Because of incredible technological developments, this invention enabled the speedier movement of complicated information, ideas, and concepts from one individual to another, or to a community.
This breakthrough transformed our perception of the universe and how we communicated with one another. Newspapers were among the print media available as early as 1900.
It offered all of the required information about the globe to people in faraway regions. Even today, newspapers are a valuable global source of information.
