GUARDIAN AND THE NATION NEWSPAPERS COVERAGE OF DEVELOPMENT ISSUES

Abstract

This study would seek to explain and analyse the impact of information and communication technologies in broadcast media. Man lives to communicate and communicates in order to survive. Several communication routes have emerged to enable this communication function.

Mobile telephony and electronic mail were welcome additions to the range of possibilities available through the numerous forms of communication channels that emerged as new media.

However, the Internet as a whole confronted mass communicators with a whole new set of obstacles as they tried to stay up with changing technologies. This study used the survey research approach, with questionnaires used to collect data, which were then tested using the chi-square statistical procedure to achieve a definitive conclusion.

The findings show that information technology and communication have significantly aided broadcast media development. Finally, many broadcast media in Nigeria have undergone developmental alterations that have altered the old methods of disseminating or circulating information.

As a result, the broadcast media has evolved over time through many stages, allowing it to thrive and adapt to the various evolving technologies available in society.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The age of knowledge and communication opened up a world of possibilities. Indeed, developments in information and communication technology have given the modern man numerous reasons to be hopeful.

In the civilised west, for example, substantial changes in people’s lives are due in part to developments in information and communication technologies.

To to Onwubalili (2004:125), “the magical changes are quite glaring in every facet of our lives and touches simplest of domestic services, to corporate and limitless industrial applications” .

One area where information technology has had a significant impact is on the media. The media, as a watchdog of society, are at the interface. They connect people with persons in positions of influence, both governmental and private. They act as the public’s and leaders’ ears and eyes, transmitting information in the form of news analysis and, yes, entertainment.

When Marshall McLuhan discussed the global village many years ago, some assumed he was joking. Today, new communication technologies have proven that he was a visionary. The new communication tools have caused people to become more involved in one another’s lives.

As Baran (1999:51) points out, Mcluhan believed that the media would allow the human tribe to become one family. Technology is a social force that alters the media landscape, not a medium in and of itself. As a result, communication technology refers to any artefacts created by humans to aid in interpersonal or mass communication.

The impact of information technology on the media sector has been enhanced. Information can reach people all over the country or the world in a matter of seconds. For example, digital technology has ushered us into a new era of human communication, known as the “information society,” and has transformed the way many men and women work in the media industry.

According to Onwubalili (2004:125), new technology allow information to be transmitted around the world in seconds and news to be delivered to people as it occurs.

This research project will therefore study these topics in light of the impact of information technology and communication in broadcast media.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Information technology serves as a powerful facilitator of globalisation, unifying the fragmented world and allowing people to get access to knowledge and services from all over the world more than ever before.

However, globalisation has resulted in the internalisation of liberal democracy as well as the integration of the economy, society, and culture. Without a sure, the globe is growing more homogeneous, with fewer disparities between people.

As a result, Nigeria’s media must rise to the occasion. They should be prepared to confront the trends that are currently driving global media, namely digitisation, liberalisation, consolidation, and globalisation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study’s aims are as follows:

i. Identify the many areas of application for information technology (IT) resources in broadcast media.

ii. Determine the impact of the usage of IT resources on the operational efficiency of Nigerian broadcast media firms.

iii. Identify the barriers to efficient use of IT resources in broadcast media.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS.

1. In what areas do you believe the use of information technology resources is required in broadcast media?

2. Is there an increase in the consumption of Nigerian broadcast media and entertainment products and services due to information technology?

1.5 Significance of the Study

The promotion of information technology has expanded the possibilities for storing and transmitting data and images using digital technology as a communication method.

The study’s goal is to determine the substantial impact of digital technology in terms of how distinct and important it is to broadcast media. This paper will examine the notion of broadcast media development in relation to the evolving role of the broadcast media in Nigeria.

The importance of information technology in broadcast media development cannot be overstated; it is one thing for a medium to adopt new communication technologies for efficiency and trend adoption, whereas another that does not do so will be unable to keep up with globalisation.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

This investigation was conducted despite numerous obstacles, the most significant of which being time constraints. The researcher had months to conduct complete investigation and submit her research project, in addition to her regular academic load. As a result, it was difficult to balance the responsibilities of carrying out this investigation with rigorous academic work.

Another barrier faced by the researcher was a lack of fiancé, which made collecting data from libraries and the internet difficult. This also limited the researcher’s speed, as the fiancé arrived gradually. However, the researcher was successful in gathering adequate material for the study in the long run.

A key issue encountered by the researcher is the respondents’ unwillingness to divulge the required information, necessitating ongoing persuading and multiple visits.

Nonetheless, despite these constraints, which were eventually overcome, the researcher was able to collect enough data to reach accurate results.
