Section I

Introduction 1.1: Background of the Research

There are several uses for radio broadcasts. They are classified as both official and informal educational broadcasting, according to Iwu and Nzeako (2010). A formal syllabus and grading system broadcast are examples of formal educational broadcasting used for instructional reasons.

Through listening to the radio, one can acquire useful knowledge related to the social work functions of adults and informal educational broadcasts: This is a reference to regularly listening to radio shows that aid in knowledge acquisition.

..

Radio is an effective mass communication tool. This is because, no matter how far away a location is, transmissions from a strong transmitter can be received there (Iwu, 2006). Football fans can benefit much from receiving coaching via radio as well.

According to Maina’s (2008) assessment, private radio stations in Nigeria have seen a surge in public engagement due to their quick expansion, usage of local languages, and phone-in remarks and shows.

According to Maina (2008), radio shows are the primary source of news and information for 89% of adult Nigerians. According to Ngechu and Peter’s (2008) research, radio broadcasts are listened to by farmers of both sexes.

They run educational activities with an agricultural theme. They were embraced by farmers as a way to enhance farming practices. Despite the fact that radio broadcasting has been studied extensively worldwide, the majority of these studies focus on its application in the field of education. This means that a study on football fans’ general radio usage is necessary.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

People education was the primary emphasis of research on radio utilisation in Nigeria (Osodo, 1985; Owigar, 1981; Waitherah, 1984; Wambutta, 1992; Odera, 1995); Gacenga (2000) also made this observation.

Therefore, conducting a study to determine the present level of listenership and utilisation of radio broadcasts was essential. Thus, it was essential to research the radio shows that Chelsea and Tottenham supporters were listening to. The researcher looked into two matters.

The first concerned how much Chelsea and Tottenham supporters listened to sports broadcast programmes, and the second concerned how much they applied the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and talents they had learned from the broadcast messages. This study evaluated radio listenership and identified how Chelsea and Tottenham supporters used messages.

who resided in Oyo State’s Ibadan Metropolis from 2012 to 2013.

1.3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study’s objectives were to find out how often sports broadcast programmes are listened to and how Chelsea and Tottenham fans in the Oyo state metropolis use their messages.

1.4. The  Objectives

The goals of the research study were to accomplish the following:

to determine how often Chelsea and Tottenham supporters in Oyo State’s Ibadan Metropolis listen to radio.

to determine how Chelsea and Tottenham supporters in Oyo State’s Ibadan Metropolis use the substance of radio messages.

to determine what influences the audio technology that fans of Chelsea and Tottenham in the Oyo state metropolis of Ibadan utilise.

1.5 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

There were responses to three research questions. These were the following:

What was the frequency of Chelsea and Tottenham supporters’ radio listening in Oyo State’s Ibadan Metropolis?

In Ibadan Metropolis in Oyo state, how did supporters of Chelsea and Tottenham use the substance of radio messages?

What elements affect the audio technology that fans of Chelsea and Tottenham employ in Oyo State’s Ibadan Metropolis?

1.6. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE REPORT

New information about radio shows that originate from sports broadcast programmes was added by the study. Until now, researchers have not paid much attention to this field.

Given that it has provided children with information on well-liked radio shows and important radio messages from Chelsea supporters, this study might be significant to parents and radio stations.

Making decisions about programming can benefit from this data. Second, the results shed light on how Chelsea supporters should be informed in an educational manner. The study contributed to the body of knowledge already available on radio listenership and message utilisation.

1.7 REGRETIONS ABOUT THE STUDY

The study’s scope was restricted to Oyo State’s Ibadan Metropolis, but other regions also need comparable research. The researcher employed focus groups, interviews, and questionnaires; nonetheless, the utilisation of observation schedules would have provided more thorough data.

1.8 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study looked into how often Chelsea and Tottenham supporters in Ibadan, Oyo state, listened to the radio, used radio messaging, and what kind of audio equipment they preferred.

1.9 PROJECT ASSUMMATIONS

The study was predicated on the idea that followers of Chelsea and Tottenham use the information they hear from sports broadcast programmes.
