ABSTRACT

This experiment tried to identify the impacts of computer literacy on the job performance of modern secretaries and to find out if secretaries without computer expertise may be conveniently hired in a modern office. The researcher used all the secretaries in NEPA Enugu Zonal office which is 75 secretaries as the population of the study. Because of the smallest of the population size, the researcher used the complete population of 75 secretaries for the investigation. The instrument utilised for data collection was a 20-iten structured questionnaire called ECLOSEC (effects of computer literacy on secretaries) which was designed by the researcher. The researcher in order to achieve the essential result issued questionnaire to certain workers of National Electric Power Authority, NEPA Enugu zonal office which was the area of study of this project, and their responses were converted. The researcher was able to found out that there are certain effects of computer literacy on modern secretaries which are speed and accuracy, neatness, easy edition, formatting and saving of documents. Also that secretaries without computer competence cannot be engaged in a modern office. In addition, the study acknowledged that secretaries’ main concern is the fear of being replaced by computers. This is because secretaries are well aware that they cannot perform their jobs effectively in a modern office without understanding of computers. A contributing factor to students’ inability to do their jobs well, according to the study, is that word processing is not treated as a serious course. The study concluded that all secretaries should make an effort to acquire computer literacy through training in order to find meaningful employment in contemporary offices, based on these data.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study

For generations, secretaries have used filing cabinets or drawers to preserve correspondence and other vital papers. The file cabinet will serve as the repository for these files, and this procedure will continue for many years.

Despite this, there comes a point when some of these records will become too worn out, misplaced, or old to be preserved in the current cabinet, necessitating their transfer. The secretary may also be unaware if another employee steals a crucial document from the company.

Also, prior to the industrial revolution, people would utilise things like sticks and stones as counting tools. The first calculator, Charles Babbage, saw the futility of the abacus approach long before anyone else.

A combination of Babbage’s notion and the knowledge he had obtained from working with punched cards led to the creation of the computer at Harvard University.

Building the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIC) in 1944 was the first step towards creating a fully mechanical computer.
