INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Cooperative societies play a significant role in growth. Its importance in development cannot be overemphasised. The socio-economic condition in this country is quite complex.
The wealthy have many advantages; they reside in cities and have access to a variety of amenities, whereas the impoverished are confined to rural areas with few or no amenities.
The majority of Nigeria’s population lives in rural areas. Rural areas are defined by their per capita income and agricultural output, which are the result of inadequate soil, tools, and infrastructure.
In light of this, the government wants to reach out to rural areas and assist them in developing through the usage of cooperative companies.
Cooperative societies in Nigeria emerged following the Great Depression of 1930-1935. The colonial overlords were primarily interested in introducing cooperatives in agricultural areas, and cooperative societies arose.
Cooperatives are socioeconomic organisations whose value in the transformation of communities has been recognised internationally.
