INTRODUCTION IN CHAPITRE 1

1.1 Background of The Research

Various reforms in Nigeria’s banking system have made the banking career more difficult in recent years (Olimugiwa, 2015). Various reforms aimed at strengthening the financial sector necessitated bank mergers, while weaker institutions were bought.

The Central Bank of Nigeria implemented a bank recapitalization policy in 2005, requiring banks to increase their capital base to N25 billion. This resulted in numerous mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector, while some banks turned to the capital market to raise more funds through the issuance of new shares.

The multiple mergers and acquisitions resulted in more job losses because most banks could not afford to operate more branches with a larger workforce. This is due to poor workforce planning and the economic slump (Uchendu, 2005). Massive layoffs in Nigeria’s banking sector resulted in increased duties for employers who survived the average effect of the acquisitions.

A work that should have been done by two or three individuals was now assigned to one person. Employees in the banking business must labour tirelessly to accomplish the bank’s goals with little or no motivation (Soludo, 2004).

Tasks that cannot be finished during working hours are now brought home to be completed. Work can be done remotely, away from the regular working environment, with the use of digital devices such as smart phones, laptops, and palmtops (Cox, 2011).

‘Work’ and ‘Life’ are two distinct realms that must be properly managed, as one might have a negative impact on the other (Agba, Nwosu, Innah, 2015). When ‘work and life’ are out of harmony, employees may experience job stress and dissatisfaction (Rotondo, Carlson, & Kincaid, 2003).

Work-life balance means the necessity to define clear boundaries between work and personal life. It can be summed up as “working without worrying plot personal issues at the office; and being at home without bringing office task on board” .

Maintaining a healthy balance between work and home life is becoming increasingly difficult in the banking sector, where there are more jobs and fewer hands to accomplish them. With the development of smart phones,

the use of digital devices for work is becoming increasingly popular among the general public; users have discovered a method to stay connected to their employment 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Rotondo, Carlson, and Kincaid (2003a)

The use of digital gadgets is becoming more widespread among Nigerian bank staff (Modi, 2011). The introduction of tablets, computers, smart phones, and social media platforms has been warmly appreciated by working-class residents because it now allows them to work remotely. Employees now have the freedom and flexibility to work from wherever they want, including their homes.

Technological advancement in the workplace has been proven to be a significant component in increasing an organization’s productivity and effectiveness. Strategic technological advances have enhanced product quality, service delivery, and workplace communication (Adeyeyetololope, 2014).

Getting the perfect balance between business and personal life, on the other hand, can be difficult. ”Since digital technology has enabled us to be connected to our employment at all times, work duties have become more onerous and intruding on our personal lives.” (Sokol,2015).

Workplace stress is on the rise, as more people believe they must be constantly linked to their devices in order to be attentive to their jobs. According to a 2014 Gallup poll, employees in the United States who use their smartphones outside of typical working hours are more likely to be stressed.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Work-related stress, job dissatisfaction, and a lack of work-life balance are vexing more employees, as more businesses demand their employees to be approachable outside of the office.

Because work may still be done at home, the potential health problems linked with technology are becoming more apparent. Work-life balance can be harmed by software and technologies that allow us to switch between working at the office and working at home.

1.3 Objectives of the Research

The study’s main goal is to investigate the impact of digital devices on work-life balance, job stress, and happiness in general, and First Bank in particular. Banks in Nigeria must establish and implement an effective work-life balance strategy in order for workers to be productive and accomplish organisational goals. The study investigates the bank’s numerous work-life balance practises and how these WLB practises effect WLB job stress and job happiness.

1.4 Research Questions

How does the use of digital devices effect First Bank’s work-life balance, job stress, and job satisfaction? The research has numerous objectives:

To identify First Bank’s various work-life balance policies and practises. The study’s goal is to identify the important work-life balance practises and policies implemented by First Bank’s management.

To investigate the influence of digital gadgets on the work-life balance of First Bank employees. The study aims to provide insight into the effects of digital devices on the work-life balance of First Bank employees.

To examine whether digital devices cause stress in First Bank workers. The study aims to provide insight into the effects of digital gadgets on job stress among First Bank employees.

To investigate the impact of digital gadgets on First Bank employees’ job satisfaction. The study aims to provide insight into the effects of digital gadgets on job fulfilment and employee happiness.

Based on the research findings, make recommendations to First Bank on the optimal work-life balance practises to implement. The research seeks to establish recommendations for First Bank regarding the types of WLB practises that would benefit First Bank and its workers.

There are various difficulties and issues covered in this research, one of which is the extent to which banks contribute to bettering the lives of their employees by best WL practises.

This is investigated in the study in order to acquire a better knowledge of the impact of digital devices on work-life balance, job stress, and job satisfaction at First Bank. Another issue is the impact of the banks’ WLB.

Given the importance of WLB to organisational performance, it is critical to explore whether the usage of digital devices affects work-life balance, job stress, and job satisfaction.

1.5 Significance of the Research

The findings of the study are important to the banking sector because these companies continue to operate in comparable circumstances. Employees of the bank will be effectively functioning in an atmosphere designed to lead to the highest success for the organisation if they understand the applicable WLB practises that would have the most significant beneficial impacts in the organisation.

The research findings also have a substantial impact on academics. The research material adds to researchers’ knowledge and understanding of work-life balance, job stress, and job happiness, as well as recommendations for measures that banks might take as part of their WLB practises.
