IMPACT OF EARLY MARRIAGE AND THE PREDICTOR OF REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CHALLENGES AMONG ADOLESCENT GIRLS A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN, OYO STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Although the number of young women marrying before the age of 18 is decreasing, a significant number of young women are still marrying as children (Mahmud 2005). In the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), early marriage truncates the girl child’s childhood and restricts several rights of the girl child, including the right to be separated from their parents against their will (Article 9), the right to freedom of expression (including seeking and receiving information and ideas, Article 13),

the right to education (Article 28 and 29), and the right to rest and leisure (Article 28). (Graham 2002). A growing collection of information suggests that the long-held idea that marriage is a safe haven for adolescent females is unsubstantiated and that early marriage is related with a range of health difficulties. ‘ Early marriage and the vulnerability of adolescent girls in poor nations like Nigeria to sexual and reproductive health issues are discussed in this article.

The burden of sexually transmitted diseases is disproportionately borne by adolescents and young adults (ASRH). ASRH has been largely ignored by international organizations in the past, but this is no longer the case. In 2002, the UN General Assembly Special Session on Children recognized the need to initiate, develop and implement health policies and programs for adolescents that promote their physical and mental health; in 2003, the Committee of the Convention on the Rights of the Child issued a General Comment recognizing the special health needs and rights of adoles (Janz 2014); (Langille 2000).

Besides the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the right to health—a concept included in various international agreements such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the international Millennium Development Goals, which include indicators to reduce and eradicate if possible pregnancy rates among 15–19 year old, increase HIV knowledge among adolescents, and reduce the spread of HIV amon the population. “Adolescents,” “youth,” and “young people” are all phrases used to describe people aged 10 to 24.

“Adolescents,” “youth,” and “young people” are all terms used to describe persons aged 10 to 24. Today, nearly half of the world’s population (1.8 billion people) are under 25 years old, with 90% living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where poverty and unemployment are a major problem.

All areas, countries, and sexes have seen an increase in the number of young people hitting puberty and engaging in sexual activity at an earlier age, which means that they remain sexually mature for longer before marriage than has been the case in the past.

The dangers of ignoring Adolescent sexual and reproductive health are extremely important, and an unpleasant or destructive transition to adulthood can have long-lasting consequences. Pregnancy and parenthood at an early age might put a woman’s health at risk and limit her educational and economic opportunities. Adolescent females, in particular, suffer a high risk of exposure to HIV, STDs, sexual coercion, exploitation, and violence.

Individuals and their families, and their communities, might suffer for years to come as a result of these factors. The health of an adolescent’s sexual and reproductive systems is greatly influenced by their social, cultural, and economic context. A person’s life experiences are shaped by a variety of factors, including their age, gender, marital status, education, place of residence, migration, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.

INTRODUCTION TO THE GENERAL ISSUE

Although many countries’ laws and international agreements prohibit early marriage, this practice continues to be prevalent, notably in Nigeria. Many of the physiological, social, and educational implications resulting from early marriage in Nigeria have impeded the preservation of the rights of the girl child, and all of these have exacerbated the problem. In many ways, early marriage has harmed the country’s civilization by exposing girls to diseases and other sorts of physical and emotional abuse, and this has a ripple effect across the rest of society.

Aims of the Research

The study’s primary goal is to evaluate the role of early marriage in Nigerian adolescent girls’ reproductive health concerns. The study’s other aims include:

An evaluation of Nigeria’s rate of early marriages.

To study the influence of early marriages on Nigerian adolescent girls’ reproductive health issues.

To determine the causes of the high rate of child marriage in Nigeria.

To find out if there is a link between early marriage and reproductive health problems in Nigerian teenage girls

Investigate key causes of reproductive health issues in Nigerian adolescent girls.

To propose measures to reduce the number of Nigerians getting married too early.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FINDINGS

Nigeria’s reproductive health concerns will be better understood through this study, which could have a significant impact on the educational and social development of young girls. Those who are interested in conducting more research on the topic will also benefit greatly from this study.

TO WHAT EXTENT THE STUDY IS LIMITED

Early marriage’s effect on reproductive health issues among Nigerian adolescent girls is the sole focus of this case study at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.

Insufficient scope of the study.

The researcher’s ability to collect data and gather important materials is often hampered by a lack of funding, which prevents them from working as efficiently (internet, questionnaire and interview).
In order to complete this study, the researcher must also work on other academic projects at the same time. This, in turn, will reduce the amount of time spent on research.
