Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In each organisation, large or small, management must set out time and resources for material storage and supply. Storage includes the management storehouse, stockyards, the operation of handling and storage equipment, and the safe custody and protection of stock in the store. All stocks stored in the store must be received and stored for future use as necessary.

Storage of materials aids in the consistent supply of materials to the user departments. Without an adequate supply of resources, there will be no storage and no activity within the organisation. Storage and supply of materials assist an organisation in meeting its aims.

Every store and organisation uses a variety of storage methods. This helps to conserve the resources for future usage. Some of these approaches are related with handling; therefore, the tasks of handling and storing must be completed concurrently.

In a small firm, the store functions may be performed in a single office, run by one storekeeper, but in a large firm or organisation, it is required to distribute the various activities to several departments, such as;

a. Identification or vocabulary part.

b. Standardisation of the warehouse and stockyard

c. Stock control records an account’s stocks section.

This division of store function improves storage efficiency, supports the steady flow of stores to the user department, and ensures the accurate identification and classification of store materials.

Thus, a little historical background of this establishment is required at this point. The Ebonyi State Agricultural Development Programme (ESADP) was established in 1996. This was done because Ebonyi state was formed by combining parts of Abia and Enugu indigene.

The Ebonyi state ADP has 15 local government areas, including two agricultural zones, the Afikpo zone and the Abakaliki zone. There are currently three zonal officers and nineteen blocks.

The zonal officers are divided into three groups: Ebonyi North, Central, and South. Ebonyi is located inside Nigeria’s decision forest belt. It has an annual rainfall of about 14mm and a temperature of 30.50°C. The land is very fertile, which favours the cultivation of a wide range of crops, particularly tubers and cereals.

1.2 Statement of the Problems

Every organisation need an efficient store and supply department. This is owing to the critical role it plays in keeping other departments operational. Having reviewed the Ebonyi State Agricultural Development Programme’s store department recordings.

The records were well organised, and there is a store ledger book in which all existing stocks will be dedicated by the storekeeper in charge. The administration set up was identified as having some issues that affect the organisation. Problems include the following:
