Impact Of Family Background On The Occupational Aspirations Of Secondary School Students

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to look into the relationship between family background and career goals among secondary school students in Umuahia Local Government Area, Abia State. The researcher uses ten (10) secondary schools chosen at random from the Umuahia Local Government sample population.

A questionnaire was utilised to collect information from 100 respondents (students). The study questions were presented as percentages, and the hypotheses were analysed using the chi-square method. The study found no significant association between parents’ socioeconomic level and students’ vocational goals.

In addition, there is a considerable association between parental educational attainment and student profession choices. It was also observed that there is no substantial correlation between parental occupation and students’ career choices.

Finally, there is a substantial association in academic achievement between students from monogamous and polygamous families in terms of career choices.

Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: that the government provide a learning environment for the school, such as a well-structured building, ventilated classrooms, well-equipped laboratories and libraries, and so on, in order to motivate students to learn and influence their career choices. Parents should encourage their children to attend school and equip them with the required materials.
