INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Leadership is a critical issue in any society or organisation. Most organisations, particularly those in the public sector, have been regarded as performing below expectations due to the kind of leadership they enjoy.

Leadership is critically important at all levels of society. Leadership is the moral and intellectual ability to envision and work for the best interests of the country and its people. Effective leadership contributes to the development of society and organisations, as well as the integration of individual and group goals in organisations within societies.

Leaders must sustain performance by sustaining current performance while also growing for the future among society’s citizens. Leaders encourage creativity and innovation, risk taking,

and skills for future development while keeping an eye on performance measures. The importance of the leader in influencing performance becomes critical to the growth of society.

1.2 WHAT EXACTLY IS LEADERSHIP?

Leadership is described as the activity of directing, guiding, and leading others to achieve goals.

According to Akinboye (2005), leadership is defined as leaders inspiring followers to act for specific goals that embody the beliefs, wants and needs, aspirations, and expectations of both leaders and followers.

Neanna (1996:93) described leadership as a leader’s ability to persuade his subordinates to work freely towards the achievement of goals.

When one hears the word “leadership” as a topic of conversation, several thoughts may come to mind; he may think of leadership in terms of power, authority, or influence, for example.

However, some internationally renowned greed names that come to mind are:

They used the records of those guys as a yardstick to assess the required attributes that efficient and effective leadership should possess, as well as the essence of the notion of leadership.

We should be concerned with the impact of strong leadership in our society in this research paper, using Adams Oshomhole, Edo State Governor, as a case study.

1.3 THE VALUE OF A GOOD LEADERSHIP

A competent leader knows where he is going: towards the achievement of a goal.

A strong leader understands how to get from here to there: he understands not just where they need to go, but also how to get there.

A competent leader determines where the country will go and, while putting up great effort to guarantee that it gets there, he must be flexible if he is to reach a beneficial outcome.

1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Leadership is inherent in any community. This is due to the fact that a society can serve as a function through which actions are performed.

However, the researcher decided to conduct this study because of these issues.

1. To ascertain why some persons in critical positions in our society believe that government-owned establishments are not their concern.

2. Do they, as a result, demonstrate a nonchalant attitude towards carrying out their responsibilities?

3. Will their subordinates display apathy or lack of enthusiasm in government job under these conditions?

4. Do some leaders place more emphasis on personal happiness than on citizen contentment?

5. Finally, some leaders fail to recognise their subordinates, particularly during decision-making processes, despite the fact that such subordinates are materials for effective decision making.

1.3 THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions were addressed in the study.

1. What are the leadership styles that can be identified in any community or Edo state?

2. What style of leadership exists in Edo state under Governor Adams Oshomhole’s administration?

3. Can strong leadership result in more development in Edo State?

1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The following are the primary goals of this study project:

To keep the exercise to a minimum, this research work aims to achieve the following results.

1. To establish the administration’s set aims or objectives and to determine if the administration is attaining that idea of leadership.

2. To determine the success of Adams Oshomhole’s administration and how it has contributed to the achievement of societal goals.

3. To investigate how strong leadership has contributed to Edo state’s development.

1.5 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study’s significance can be separated into two major categories: theoretical significance and practical significance.

The Importance of Theory

As a case study, certain generalisations and hypotheses of this study can be utilised to explain the impact of strong leadership in our society.

The Practical Importance

This study would be valuable to most students and other inhabitants of Edo State who need to understand the significance of excellent leadership. Organisational management can use the study’s findings and recommendations to increase the qualities of justice for the aim of subordinate performance.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study examines the impact of good leadership in our society, focusing on Adams Oshomhole’s administration and its impact on the growth of Edo State.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

This entails explaining concepts connected to the study that, if not clarified, may hinder people’s understanding of the research report. Leadership terms include:

LEADERSHIP: According to Akinboye (2005), leadership is defined as leaders encouraging followers to act for specific goals that embody the beliefs, wants and needs, aspirations, and expectations of both leaders and followers.

However, spears (1990:43) defined leadership as “getting things done by working with people and physical resources through coordination, influencing, directing, and so on to achieve the goals of an organisation or society.”

According to Chijioke (1987:15), leadership is defined as directing a group of people towards the achievement of their aims or ambitions.

ADMINISTRATION

This is the act or process of administering, particularly the administration of a government or big institution.

PERFORMANCE: A performance is an action or achievement measured in terms of how successful or unsuccessful a worker contributed to the production of an organisation or society.

ORGANISATION: An established entity with an express or implied goal.

DEMOCRACY

Is a form of governance in which the supreme authority is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

DEVELOPMENT: A new occurrence or stage that is likely to affect what happens in an ongoing situation. It could be in the political and economic realms.
