ABSTRACT

This study investigated the empirical impact of an infectious pandemic on agriculture and food security, using coronavirus illness as a case study. The goals of this study were to determine the prevalence of coronavirus disease in Nigeria and the impact of coronavirus disease on agricultural activities in Nigeria.

The study’s focus is on Nigerian farmers, and the infectious disease transmission mechanism theory serves as a framework. The research design for this study is a survey, and the demographic addressed is all farmers in the country. 400 farmers were chosen as the sample size, and the cluster sampling technique was used. This study’s instrument is a questionnaire.

Data were acquired from original sources. According to the data analysis, the level of coronavirus disease in Nigeria is average when compared to other nations, and coronavirus disease has had an impact on agricultural activities in the country.

Following the findings, it was advised that steps be developed to slow the spread of the virus and that a vaccine be developed to prevent increased reliance on agricultural activities.

The government should also invent a mechanism to minimise food insecurity in the nation. The researchers find that coronavirus illness has a negative impact on agriculture.

Nigeria’s agricultural industry has little weaponry for dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak. Nigeria’s government is under pressure to strike a balance between citizen health, economic stability, and debt repayment.

Following more than a decade of extraordinary economic prosperity, the world is experiencing another global economic downturn. In the last week, the Nigerian government has implemented humanitarian measures to alleviate the economic pressures caused by the COVID-19 epidemic and the ensuing economic crisis.

Controlling the spread of influenza to decrease the impact of infection on a community is a critical responsibility of the public health sector and any nation’s government. The Nigerian private and agricultural sectors are affected

Concerns over food supplies have become the latest source of concern as public life is shut down. Market stability and supply availability are critical components of a country’s GDP.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory ailment that can be transmitted from person to person. COVID-19 is caused by a novel coronavirus, which was discovered during an examination of an outbreak in Wahan, China, in late December 2019.

COVID-19 is spreading from person to person in China, and very little transmission among close contacts has been observed in certain countries outside of China, such as Nigeria. There is currently no COVID-19 vaccine, nor is there a specialised antiviral treatment.

Akinboyo (2008) describes agriculture as the study of using land to grow plants and animals. It involves simplifying nature’s food webs and redirecting energy for human planting and animal consumption.

It is not an exaggeration to say that agriculture plays a significant role in any nation’s growth and development. Agriculture has served as a growth engine for Nigeria’s economy.

The agriculture sector’s value to any economy cannot be overstated, especially when considering employment opportunities and financial implications. Nigeria’s diverse environment allows it to grow a variety of food and income crops.

Agriculture is extremely important to Nigeria’s economic development because it provided a significant portion of the country’s food and employment.

Although the COVID-19 epidemic is largely a public health catastrophe, researchers are already concerned that the virus will have a far-reaching influence on Nigeria and the global economy, causing widespread socioeconomic disruptions.

Their stability is critical to the system’s continued operation. Individuals are being quarantined or placed under lockdown, limiting their capacity to carry out agricultural operations.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of an infectious pandemic on agriculture and food security using the coronavirus disease as a case study.

 

1.2. Statement of the Research Problem

Human health is seen as the most important aspect of any country’s survival, as a healthy population achieves the desired results. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), found in 2019, spreads from person to person. The first case of COVID-19 in Sub-Saharan Africa has been identified in Nigeria.

According to the data accessible to us, COVID-19 is currently in Nigeria.

The patient who initially introduced it to Nigeria is an Italian national who works in Nigeria and arrived in the commercial hub of Lagos from Milan on February 25, 2020. (BBC News; 2020).
