IMPACT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ON RADIO NEWS REPORTING IN NIGERIA

INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Broadcasting has been at the forefront of many technological changes, particularly in digitization and the advancement of existing technology. For example, digital technology now allows listeners to obtain traffic and news while listening to a cassette, compact disc, or radio station, among other things (Church Akpan 2006).

We are all living in a changing world, and we have all been conditioned to accept changes in the way we think and relate over the years. Thus, communication between the peoples of the world, which previously sounded utopian, is now becoming a

reality before our very eyes, giving practical meaning to Marshall Mollohan’s vision of the world as a global village interconnected by communication technologies (Mc Lucan, 1964. P47) ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) refers to electronic machines and devices. Their application is capable of both computing and communication.

They range from physical devices such as digital cameras, tape recorders, computers, sensing devices, scanners, mobile phones, and so on to cyberspace, which includes the internet, software, teleconferencing, satellite, and so on. Their application is broad and spans all interpersonal and mass communication media, giving their operations and performance greater power, robustness, and veracity.

Radio is still the most persuasive, accessible, affordable, and flexible mass medium available in cities, urban towns, and rural areas more than ninety years after the world’s first broadcasting station was pounded. It is frequently the only mass medium available to the vast majority of people.

The incorporation of information and communication technologies into broadcasting, particularly radio broadcasting, is thus intended to boost and improve the quality of broadcast programs. The most significant advancements have been the digitization of radio signals, innovative programming, and live reporting from any location on the planet.

It is also believed that the application of information and communication technologies has elevated the radio broadcasting business. This explains why this project is being undertaken with the goal of determining the impact of information and communication technologies on broadcasting, using Atlantic FM in Uyo as a reference point.

1.2 Problem Statement

The majority of radio reporting research focuses on coverage of specific events of general interest and program critique. This is due to the fact that it allows for a close examination of radio station output. Today, with the addition of a profit-making bias to the radio broadcasting business, news and other programs are viewed as products that must be well packaged.

Atlantic FM, Uyo, is a new radio station in Akwa-ibom State. It is certain, however, that it employs information and communication technologies in broadcasting functions.

As a result, the purpose of this study is to determine the impact of information and communication technology (ICTs) on radio news reporting.

1.3 The Study’s Purpose
The following are the study’s objectives:

To find out if Atlantic FM, Uyo uses information and communication technologies in its broadcast reporting, click here.
To determine the extent to which ICT is used in broadcast reporting on Atlantic FM in Uyo.
To investigate the impact of information and communication technologies on broadcast reporting output at Atlantic FM Radio in Uyo.
To make recommendations on how to use ICT in news reporting.

1.4 Research Issues
The following research questions were developed:

What is the extent to which information and communication technologies are used in Atlantic FM’s broadcast reporting in Uyo?
Is Atlantic FM, Uyo, utilizing modern Information and Communication Technologies in its broadcast reporting?

1.5 Research Proposal
This study will be affected by the following research hypothesis:

H1: Atlantic FM in Uyo employs ICT in radio new broadcasting.

H0: Atlantic FM in Uyo does not use modern ICT in its radio new reporting.

H2: The use of ICT will improve the quality of radio news reporting on Atlantic FM Uyo.

H0: The use of ICT will not improve the quality of broadcast reporting on Atlantic FM in Uyo.

1.6 Study Purpose
This study is limited to the radio services of The Atlantic FM, Uyo. The findings and their outcomes can only be used to assess the impact created in other radio stations where information and communication technologies are used in program broadcasting.

1.7 Importance of the Research
The study’s findings are expected to provide information that will help radio broadcasting improve through the use of ICTs, as well as insight to Atlantic FM’s management.

It will also assist the team in making necessary improvements in areas where they are found to be lacking, as well as provide a model for researchers and institutions of higher learning to use as a reference point.

1.8 Term Definitions
Terms’ definitions were operationally defined.

Communication is the process by which information, ideas, and attitudes are passed from one person to another.

Broadcast reporting is the journalistic act of gathering, covering, working, editing, and presenting news over the radio.

FM (Frequency Modulation): This is a type of radio broadcast service in which the frequency varies in a manner corresponding to the sound of the voice/music transmitted, at a rate of 186 thousand miles per second. Edwin Armstrong discovered it in the 1930s, and it is assigned to the very high frequency (VHF) band of the radio spectrum, which ranges from thirty to three hundred megahertz.

Radio is a telecommunication system that uses electromagnetic waves to modulate and transmit data.

ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) are a group of technologies that enable modern radio communication without the need for face-to-face meetings.
