IMPACT OF INTERNET AS A RESEARCH TOOL FOR STUDENTS OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This research is a case study of the impact of internet usage on academic performance of undergraduate students at the University of Abuja in Nigeria. The survey method was used for data collection, and questionnaires were used as the instrument.
The study’s population was the entire student body of the University of Abuja, with students chosen at random from each level to create a total sample of 375 students who were given questionnaires. Out of the 375 questionnaires distributed, 200 were returned to the researcher unanswered. Inferential statistics, frequency tables, and percentages were used to analyze the data collected.
The findings revealed that the Internet is one of the most beneficial tools in this era of IT, not only for business but also for academic purposes, as it improves students’ skills and capabilities, assisting them in their studies and professional lives.
It also revealed that some of the issues encountered when using the Internet include a lack of computer skills, a slow internet server, and the inability to pay for online services. The study suggests that the university implement an information literacy/sensitization program for students in order for them to effectively utilize the various web-based electronic resources to which they have subscribed.
Introduction
The Internet is a worldwide network of computers that are linked together over long distances. It was developed as a means of communication by the American military and has been in use since the 1950s. Until the mid to late 1980s, commercial organizations and educational institutions were the primary users of the Internet. This was because of the high costs.
Because of the rapid advancement of technology, communication links have improved and costs have decreased. The implication is that the Internet is now more widely available to a larger number of people. Since the Internet is now available to a large portion of the Western world’s population, many educational institutions have capitalized on its educational potential.
For students looking for project and assignment ideas, the Internet is a great resource. With over 50 million websites on the internet, any information, no matter how obscure, is likely to be found. The only tools needed to find this information are some perseverance and a good search engine.
It is also a useful tool for lecturers in assisting with the preparation of lesson plans, as there are a number of sites dedicated to providing educational material, particularly in the United States. It also serves as a forum for time and distance-independent group discussion.
This group discussion can take many different forms. These include video conferencing, in which members of a group can see and hear each other by using a small video camera and microphone. Group discussions can also take the form of chat rooms, in which everyone gathers in a host area and communicates with one another via the keyboard. Although there are numerous benefits to using the Internet as an educational tool, there are also numerous drawbacks.
For first-time users, the Internet can be a hostile environment, but with frequent use, users can become acquainted with it fairly quickly. Because of the vast amount of information available on the internet, users are frequently sidetracked by irrelevant information.
Because the Internet is not owned by anyone, there are no checks or censorships in place. The benefit of this is that information is freely available to everyone without restriction; however, the disadvantage is that information can end up in the wrong hands.
Furthermore, because there are no checks on the information on the internet, inaccuracies and misleading information may be published. The Internet is heavily reliant on hardware, which can be costly, especially given how rapidly the Internet is evolving.
As a result, in order to fully benefit from this evolving technology, upgrades in hardware and software are required. With the advent of the Internet, education has benefited in more ways than can be mentioned, and while it will not replace traditional methods of education, it will continue to play an important role.
The University of Ibadan began as the University of London’s University College of Ibadan. It accepted its first class of students in 1948. The 32-year-old Faculty of Technology is dedicated to the advancement and application of knowledge in Agricultural Engineering,

Archeaology and Anthropology, Botany and Microbiology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology are now part of the Faculty. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso was founded in 1990.
The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, one of the four founding Faculties with which the University began in 1990, is made up of five departments: Pure and Applied Biology, Pure and Applied Chemistry, Pure and Applied Mathematics, Pure and Applied Physics, and General Studies.
The Faculty of Engineering and Technology, which includes departments such as Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Technology and Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, is also a foundation faculty.
