ABSTRACT
This study includes an analysis into the impact of material management on the profitability of the manufacturing company, 7UP. The study was conducted in a bottling plant in Kaduna, with a sample size of 100 employees.
Data was collected using a self-created questionnaire, and the results were analysed using the basic percentage approach. Chi square was also utilised to test the hypothesis.
The validity and reliability of the instrument were determined. The result of the study reveals that there is a positive effect of material management on the profitability of the organisation because material management affects the product output and this will definitely influence the profitability of the organisation.
Manufacturing firms in Nigeria are encouraged to increase their resource commitment to staff training in Materials Management so as to develop skills, update knowledge, enhance new product development, and create indigeno

1.0 Introduction.
It goes without saying that every organisation preserves materials that are critical to its operations. Any facility that is set up to produce something or another; any organisation could be a goods producer, a service provider, or both, and they must use materials in all of their operations, and these materials must be correctly managed in order to accomplish the intended results.
Materials management is one of the most technologically advanced functions in any organisation. Thus, it must be determined when, how, and by whom materials should be handled. It discusses the methods of moving, packing, and storing things. It is worth noting that no distinct procedure was previously used.
However, today there are several ways used, such as the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) and the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS).
1.1 Background of the Study.
Material management is the dominant aspect of organisational operations that tries to transform management processes.
It is evident that in all types of organisations, management effort is frequently directed towards the effective and efficient administration of materials.
Furthermore, management practices have come to realise that in today’s world, success can only be ensured by a practical and holistic approach to materials management.
Materials management is more than just a technique; it is a philosophy based on the belief that long-term success is dependent on the uniform commitment to materials management in 7Up Plc, Kaduna Plant, which can be achieved through the interplay of both analytical and holistic capabilities of the individuals involved.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Materials management, as we all know, is the “life blood” of every organisation. Unfortunately, most firms have delegated materials management tasks to substandard individuals.
As a result, the study’s primary concern is unethical practices at the 7Up Plc Kaduna plant, such as the placement of unqualified personnel on functional tasks for which they lack professional knowledge, overinvoicing, and local raw material inaccessibility. As a result, there is a problem with material wastage and pilferage at the 7Up Plc plant in Kaduna.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary goal of this study is to determine the impact of material management on the profitability of a manufacturing company in Nigeria. Specifically, the study attempts to

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study would contribute to the understanding of the subject matter “materials management” and would also assist managers at the 7Up Plc Kaduna facility in addressing the effects of stock taking, stock checking, and stock recording in the organisation, as one of the key components of materials management.
It would allow managers to increase productivity while minimising or eliminating material-related issues for students and firms beginning materials management operations.
It will normally assist management in minimising waste and pilferage of materials while also improving efficient material utilisation.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on materials management as an efficient productivity tool at Seven Up (7-Up) Nigeria Plc’s Kaduna factory. The study would include the practical actions carried out by the Seven Up (7Up) Nigeria Plc Kaduna plant from the identification of new orders to the delivery of ordered products to the user department between 2008 and 2012).
1.7 Limitations of the study
Every researcher is bound to encounter difficulties during their research. One of the issues anticipated during this research project is a lack of participation from subjects or objects, resulting in fewer than expected numbers, a poor return of questionnaires
and an inability to employ appropriate data collection devices due to ignorance of their availability. Another limitation was the staff’s attitude during their visits to the organisation. Despite the restraints, I was able to complete the research satisfactorily.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Stocks: These are raw materials of various grades stored in a warehouse.
Stores are houses or structures designed for the secure storage of items.
Logistics is the process of averaging the movement and storage of commodities and materials from their origin to the place of final consumption.
Bulk Issues: These are products produced in predetermined amounts in defined divisions.
Obsolescence refers to items in stock that have become obsolete and are no longer useful to the organisation.
Distribution Requirement Planning (DRP): This is a request made by customers at locations of use or demand.
Stock Yard: An open-air area where commodities can be stored for an extended period of time without deterioration.
Work in Progress (WIP) inventory include materials that are partially finished or assembled.
Scrap refers to waste, used, or surplus materials or parts resulting from manufacturing operations or other activities.
