IMPACT OF OIL SPILLAGE ON THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
ABSTRACT
Prospecting for oil in Nigeria dates back to the 1930s. Because of the economic benefits of petroleum oil, several firms have spread throughout the Delta region of the Niger River in search of oil resources.
The act of oil prospecting and production cannot continue without providing enormous benefits to various parties while also posing risks and causing occasional damages to others.
In light of this realisation, this research investigated and determined the many repercussions and implications of locating and removing the extractive material (oil) from its resting place.
As a result, the primary goals of this research were to investigate the various operations of oil mining from the perspective of a town planner, as they affect man and his immediate surroundings.
The various aims are to explore the impact of oil mining pollution on the built environment, as well as to examine the impact of oil mining on people’s lives.
The study’s scope was limited to SAPELE, but for the sake of completeness, references were made to other areas of the Delta results based on the data analysed. Based on the data analysed, recommendations were given to mitigate the effects of oil mining on the built environment.
