IMPACT OF POVERTY ON CITIZENS’ EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

POVERTY HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM FOR EVERY SOCIETY OVER THE YEARS. THIS PAPER ANALYSES THE CONCEPTUAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH POVERTY OVER CITIZENS’ EDUCATION.

It also examines the causes of poverty and the various programmes put in place to alleviate poverty, such as the Family Economic Advancement Programme (FEAP) and the Poverty Alleviation Programme (PAP), as well as the various forms in which the government has intervened.

THE QUESTION IS, HOW FAR HAVE THESE PROGRAMMES SERVED AS ACTIVE POVERTY ALLEVIATION INSTRUMENTS IN THE COUNTRY?

THIS PAPER SUGGESTS THAT, WHILE THESE MEASURES HAVE NOT ACHIEVED AS MUCH AS POVERTY ALLEVIATION INSTRUMENTS DUE TO OPERATIONAL DEFICIENCIES,

THEY ARE STILL GOOD INSTRUMENTS THAT CAN BE IMPROVED. THIS RESEARCH ALSO DETERMINED THAT THE INCREASE IN THE CRIME WAVE IS A RESULT OF THE FRUSTRATION THAT THE POOR EXPERIENCE AS A RESULT OF THEIR DEPRIVATION OF EDUCATION DUE TO POVERTY.

WORKABLE AND FEASIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS IN THE EDUCATIONAL SECTOR HAVE BEEN PROPOSED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE QUALITATIVE EDUCATION FOR THE CITIZENS.

INTRODUCTION IN CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This paper examines the impact of poverty on citizens’ educational growth, with a focus on Federal Polytechnic Oko in Anambra State.

Poverty has an impact on items that can lead to ineffective growth in citizens’ educational development. It is important to understand that poverty has impacted any organization’s ability to achieve its goals.

Citizens’ educations encounter several challenges, which have a negative impact on the growth of such institutions.

In light of the foregoing, it piqued my interest to embark on this research study with the goal of determining the effects, causes, and possible solutions to the effect of poverty on the educational development of citizens, with a particular focus on Federal Polytechnic, Oko students in Anambra state.

Nonetheless, formal education in Nigeria dates back to the arrival of the colonial masters. Its existence is not obscure.

They arrived with the purpose of extending their superior government, religion, and culture to West African countries, as well as participating in trade dealings with the people of those countries.

When they arrived on the borders of these countries, for example, Nigeria, they were unable to interact with the people in their native tongue.

They created a plan to teach the people the ways of their life, their language, so some consented, and those who agreed were wiser than those who rejected the notion.

Some beneficiaries have characterised education as a librating force, releasing people from the clutches of illiteracy, superstition, inferiority complex, and other barbaric activities since its formal introduction.

Despite all of the benefits that education has bestowed upon us, it has been plagued by a slew of issues, one of which is poverty.

Poverty has completely stifled Nigeria’s educational growth. From the time education was formally established in the country with the imposition of a small amount of money on each student, many people who would have become ambassadors and policymakers for our country could not afford to pay such money, putting their future in jeopardy.

Education was only available to those who were born into royal families involved in the shady business of slave trafficking or to families of wealthy farmers who supplied the raw materials sought by European traders.

Furthermore, the government later recognised that it has a significant role to play in its citizens’ education. It has been observed that the richness and magnificence of a country are dependent on the quality and quantity of education provided to its population.

Now, the government has been exposed as an impediment to education by allocating an appropriate percentage of its revenue to people’ education. The international community has recognised the condition of developing-country people in terms of educational progress and the challenges that poverty has brought.

This is seen in the efforts of UNICEF, a branch of the United Nations Organisation. As a result, the effect on poor educational development of Nigerian residents was investigated. Using a Federal Polytechnic Oko student as an example.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The thinking capacity of the people serves as a gauge for measuring the extent of the citizen’s educational growth. The citizens’ behaviours, approach to issue resolution, and physical appearance. Education is obviously highly important, especially now when practically everyone aspires to be educated and enlightened.

Many individuals wish to be literate in order to be informed, for he who is not informed is clearly deformed, and he who is misshapen is abnormal. The researcher is motivated to write on this topic because poverty is a multifaceted issue.

It comes with a slew of issues that may be inextricably linked to it. It carries other issues with it, such as malnutrition, a low level of living, and dirty and worn clothing.

Furthermore, observing this issue, Baba Danjuma (2002) concluded that “the pauper lacks the resources to send his child to school.”

Even in areas where schooling is free, the poor child faces an uphill battle since physical starvation interferes with good mental nourishment.” From the foregoing argument, it is clear that poverty impedes children’s intellectual, educational, psychological, and other development.

People with low per capita income will have a limited educational development since they will not have access to the things that make life worthwhile. This study looked into how poverty impacts the educational growth of Nigerian citizens in order to discover a solution.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The fundamental goal of this study is to highlight the challenges and impediments that poverty has brought to citizens’ educational growth.

To determine whether poverty is a desirable or undesirable condition, as well as the criteria for gauging poverty.

To determine whether the impact of poverty on educational development is temporary or lasting. Also, to assess whether the existence of poverty is caused by citizens, the government, or both.

Also, to determine and recommend the best ways to alleviate poverty and improve citizens’ educational attainment.

Finally, despite financial limits, residents should appreciate the value of education in their life.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research is significant in that it has exposed the need for poverty reduction in the country as it relates to the life wire of the society and has raised awareness about the challenges poverty has caused to our schooling.

Furthermore, this effort will assist us in studying how our country’s development policy might help to lessen the impact of poverty and, as a result, boost people’ educational development, thereby eliminating the permanent or seasonal occurrence of poverty among its residents.

The knowledge gathered in this study will assist us in determining the degree of the harm caused by poverty to educational development and methods for correcting the abnormality.

At the conclusion of this task, the government should be made aware that it has a responsibility to play in reducing economic inequality between the rich and the poor, so that the latter can afford the training expenses of their children.

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTION

The following research issues will be addressed in this project.

1) How does poverty affect the academic achievement of Federal Polytechnic Oko students?

2) What do citizens do when they lack access to education as a result of poverty?

3) Has the federal government or an international organisation assisted in lowering poverty and increasing the poor’s educational status?

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Because of the numerous issues that plague this study, the researcher has decided to focus solely on the influence of poverty on the educational growth of F.P.O students.

It is important to emphasise that poverty impacts other aspects of human life, but the focus of this study is on educational development.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
