This study aimed to assess the influence of social media on contemporary journalism practices in Nigeria, specifically focusing on journalists in the Lagos metropolitan. The advent of information communication technology, such as the internet, has enabled individuals to get knowledge about events without physically attending them.
Journalists have the ability to disseminate news globally using the internet. Historically, advancements in technology and communication have been closely linked, and recent technical breakthroughs, such as the internet, have propelled the field of communication to unprecedented heights.
The evolution of human communication has been shaped by numerous groundbreaking inventions and discoveries, leading to significant revolutions. The introduction of pictographs, which were the earliest form of written communication in ancient times, revolutionised the way people communicated through writing.
The inscriptions were carved on stone and remained stationary. In order to accomplish this objective, a thorough examination of relevant literature was conducted.
The study utilised the social responsibility theory as a pertinent framework. The study employed a quantitative research design, specifically utilising a cross-sectional survey method.
The primary data gathering instrument utilised was a questionnaire. Chi-square tests were employed. The study recruited participants from journalists residing in Lagos city in Lagos State, employing the purposive sampling technique. The study was directed by three research questions and one alternate hypothesis.
Research findings indicate that social media platforms have significantly improved the efficiency of journalists in Lagos state. A substantial percentage of journalists rely on these platforms to gather news and do other tasks.
In order to achieve this objective, the researcher said that journalists should conduct a thorough investigation into the various social media platforms to determine which ones are dependable and credible.
They may then utilise these platforms to fulfil their journalistic responsibilities. The researcher proposed conducting additional investigations on the impact of social media in upholding democracy, advertising, public relations, and public opinion surveys.
