Abstract
The research was conducted to justify the effectiveness of guidance and counselling services in Sokoto metropolis. The research method employed in this study was descriptive survey research. The population of this study consists of students from secondary schools in the Sokoto metropolitan, which include boarding, day, and private schools.

Four (4) schools were chosen within the Sokoto metropolis, and fifty (50) pupils were drawn from each to represent the population. Random sampling techniques were utilised in this study. This research used a questionnaire as its instrument, and the data was analysed using a basic percentage.

The major finding of this study is that the majority of female students aim to be doctors. We also discovered that the level of education of parents has significantly grown, which has impacted students to aspire to higher education.

We also discovered that parents have little direct influence on students’ profession choices. It was recommended that the authorities in charge adequately guide students in choosing the right career decision, and that more female students be encouraged to pursue medical careers, particularly in northern Nigeria.

We also urge that school authorities organise various guiding and counselling activities in schools, and that resource persons be assigned to provide lectures in various professions, particularly to final-year students.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background for the Study

According to Melvin (1975), secondary school education is the engine chamber of information acquisition, a time at which pupils come into touch with many courses, determining the field of study they would pursue in higher institutions.

Secondary school education is a level that comes after primary education but before higher education. Its position in the educational system also demonstrates its relevance.

According to Schwarzeller (1962), education provides an outside perspective on what needs to happen in order for change to occur, as well as an equitable opportunity for developing skills and talents.

Nigerian education reforms have always focused on secondary schools. In reality, it is seen as an important time for the development of information, skills, and experience, as well as a diverse range of employment opportunities for young boys and girls (Ezekwesili, 2006).

It is a system that aims to improve secondary school education and equip students with more practical knowledge that would enable them to be self-sufficient after graduation. According to Kutara (1977), individuals differ from one another, which influences who they are and what they are capable of doing.

What a person accomplishes may not always be consistent with his talent, aptitude, and interest. Individual variances in development rate, intelligence, school accomplishment, and gender typically set the pace for how students view themselves in terms of job direction.

However, elements such as home, school, mosque, church, and community play an important role in the students’ surroundings, influencing their professional choices or aspirations.

Other considerations such as parental expectations, high pay, societal status, personal stability, good rapport with friends, opportunities for growth, and the nature of the profession itself have directly or indirectly enticed most students ready to leave school to make unrealistic career decisions.

Career in the field of counselling has a broad and technical meaning. Technically, it refers to the sequence of roles or positions that include labour, leisure, and educational pursuits and may include a variety of occupations, vocations, or employment that one engages in during his working life (Seligman, 1980).

According to the International Encyclopaedia Britannica (1978), a career is a position that allows employees to grow throughout their working lives, allowing them to take on more responsibility and earn more money.

A career can also be defined as a person’s entire lifelong experience with employment that has become his means of earning a living. Choosing a career used to be easier than it is now.

There were fewer work opportunities, and more crucially, parents, teachers, and religious organisations were aware of the available opportunities and the prerequisites for admittance into them.

Today, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that secondary school students rarely have a thorough understanding of the requirements for each job and can no longer keep up with the numerous career opportunities. It is against this backdrop that guidance and counselling was introduced to assist secondary students in selecting a career.

Guidance and counselling is a helpful profession that is involved with shaping, reconstructing, and rehabilitating troubled individuals. It is a self-revealing partnership that both prevents and treats maladaptive behaviour. It is widely acknowledged that guidance and counselling activities are for humans, with or without issues, normal or aberrant.

The establishment of modern advice and counselling in Nigerian secondary schools, on the other hand, is based on a recognition of the need for a more complex and comprehensive package to assist individuals in dealing with the difficulties and concerns of modern life.
