Influence Of Guidance Programme On Academic Achievement Of Ss2 Students
Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Guidance and counselling as a field in education is concerned with supporting students all over the world to operate efficiently by allowing them to overcome obstacles that may impede them from achieving self-actualization in their academic pursuits.
This emphasises the importance of supervision and counselling for today’s African children and teenagers. To be effective, guidance approaches must be based on African-inspired beliefs (Esen, 1977).
The National Policy for Education. This document clearly states the need for the integration of individuals into sound and effective citizens, as well as the provision of equal educational opportunities for all citizens of the nation at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of education, both inside and outside of the formal school system.
The transition from the 6-5-2-3 to the new 6-3-3-4 educational system is also included in the National Policy on Education. This revision resulted from the 1969 Curriculum Conference.
Based on the philosophical idea that, while intellectual development is a basic function of education, educational goals must be envisaged in terms of a far larger realisation of the numerous elements of human nature.
This is because it is the school’s responsibility to instill in each student the habits and abilities necessary for him to discover his place and use that place to positively mould himself and society.
Educational objectives should go beyond the tightly defined boundaries of intellectual development. It must entail instructing the individual in the proper use of the head, heart, and hands. (Okanfor, 2004).
It was against this backdrop that the national education policy was redesigned/harmonized to be geared towards self-realization, better human relationships, individual and national efficiency, effective citizenship, national consciousness, national unity, as well as social, cultural, economic, political, scientific, and technological progress (NPE, 1981; Okafor 1988).
In addition to the changes in the school system, the country has seen a number of economic, technological, political, and social developments in recent years that have shook all areas. As a result, the machine that was invented today will become obsolete tomorrow. The solutions adopted now will be out of date tomorrow.
The most popular courses today will be replaced by new ones tomorrow. In situations like this, professional guidance services become an essential component of the equation, allowing students to get a deeper understanding of themselves and their surroundings. Understanding oneself and one’s environment can help to advance technology.
