Abstract

The study aims to look into the impact of cell phone usage on traditional tools among undergraduate students at Delta State University Abraka. The study used the Technology Acceptance Model as its theoretical framework.

The survey design was utilised to conduct the research, with 120 questionnaires distributed to students. Undergraduate students always use their mobile phones for more than two activities that are proportional to general activities, such as school-related activities and religious activities.

Undergraduate students spent more than two hours on their mobile phones. The primary use of a cell phone by an undergraduate student at Delta State University Abraka is for academic purposes.

It is evident that mobile phones tackle everyday problems with mobile applications. The results revealed that undergraduate students face complications when utilising their cell phones.

The study recommended that students find a way to balance the use of mobile for school-related and general activities, that applications with learning assistance be used as often as possible as long as they have an impact on their studies

that students not superimpose the shorthand used frequently with mobile phone during any school activities, and that mobile phone usage be limited to lecture time.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background for the study

Prior to the introduction of ICTs, conventional instruments were acknowledged to be effective in teaching university students. Conventional tools are the implements used by students to learn. These tools are both convenient and bulky.

They are mostly hardware. Students employ these instruments in their daily activities, including learning, social, and traditional life. They include hard copy bibles, dictionaries, calculators, note books, cameras, radio sets, torch lights, calendars, jolters, wrist watches, and tape recorders, among other things.

These traditional tools were highly considered as essential tools for learning, as well as other educational and social activities. They provide certain basic activities, making them useful tools for pupils (Chatterjee, 2014).

According to Parker (2005), pupils struggle to transport these items due to their bulkiness. Imagine shifting a dictionary or a radio set from one location to another. Some traditional tools have been incorporated into mobile phones since their inception.

Torchlights, calendars, and Bibles are examples of such items. As mobile phone applications evolved into smart phones, the use of mobile phones became obvious. Smart mobile phones are now versatile tools.

In this era, mobile phones have grown popular among everyone since they are quite convenient; with a cell phone in our hands, we can solve many problems and keep most of the information throughout the world.

This emphasises that mobile phones contain applications that allow and enable human activities to move smoothly. The mobile phone made it easier and more efficient for humans to perform their routine and daily tasks.

According to Sunny and Gorge (2015), mobile phones, or smart phones, are quickly becoming the primary computer and communication device in people’s lives.

A mobile phone is a phone that can make and receive phone calls via a radio link that travels across a large geographic area. It achieves it via connecting to a mobile phone operator’s cellular network, which provides access to the public telephone network.

In addition to telephones, current mobile phones enable a wide range of other services, including text messaging SMS, email, internet access, short-range wireless communications (Infrared, Bluetooth), business applications, gaming, and photocopying. Smart phones are mobile devices that provide these and other types of computing capabilities.

Mobile phones bring the world of relationships closer to individuals by bringing scientific applications that address human socialisation difficulties.

According to Chatterjee (2015), the cultural significance of the cell phone has expanded beyond that of a basic tool or appliance. It’s becoming a commodity. Since almost everyone owns and openly wears a cell phone, its worth has shifted beyond usefulness to the realm of meaning.

According to Lyon (2001), the use and utility of mobile phones encompasses all aspects of human activity, including commerce, agriculture, education, finance, craftsmanship, and engineering.

Mobile phones are also increasing the operations of formal and informal professions by supplying extensive information, skill, and technical methods for conducting business.
