INFLUENCE OF NEW MEDIA ON INFORMATION ACQUISITION

Abstract

In this era of information and communication technology, social media, particularly blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, BBM, and 2go, among others, have revolutionised and redefined mass media’s monopoly on news and information, allowing citizens to participate in news gathering and dissemination.

The study looked on the impact of new media on information acquisition by freshmen at Lead City University. In recent years, new media has transformed citizens into not only information consumers but also information distributors,

a phenomenon known as “citizen journalism”. Most residents have their own blog, group, or room on new media platforms where they publish news articles and gather information.

Others obtain their stories from video platforms like YouTube. The survey research method was employed, and a questionnaire was created as a research tool to extract information from the selected respondents. The replies received revealed that the majority of pupils have access to new media or social media.

Students used WhatsApp, BBM, and Facebook more than other social media platforms. As a result, Lead City University students make extensive use of modern media. Most users of new or social media spend 6-10 hours every day.

To make online messages more accurate and credible, the government should ensure that owners of websites and blogs in the country follow defamation, obscenity, and invasion of privacy laws, which can be accomplished by establishing a body solely responsible for monitoring the manifest content of internet materials.
